Pre-Season Player Watch

Post any players who seem to be doing better than expected and pre-season, and may either lock up a roster spot in the lineup or even a starting spot.

For New England:

WR Julian Edelman

Was a QB in college, and this white boy looks like a Wes Welker wanna be. In the opening game, returned a punt 75 yards for a TD (juked out a guy and sprinted past everyone), and while playing Welker's slot role he often looked like Wes making cuts through the middle of the field.

He had 5 catches for 37 yards.

49ers: FB Brit Miller..looked good last night against Denver. 2 Reception/2 Touchdowns.

With Keasey breaking his arm he could possibly make the team.

Aaron Brown rookie RB from TCU had a 32 yard TD run and 50 yard TD catch also had some nice returns. Hopefully this means Cason is off the team.

I might add Stafford looked awesome but his WRS dropped 4 wide open passes.

Journyman Samkon Gado had a 77 yard TD run for the Rams vs. the Jets, and has also worked hard in camp to learn how to play FB, getting rave reviews from Spags.

I think he'll stick even though the Rams list Kenneth Darby & Antonio Pittman as the top two Jackson backups.

If he isn't a lock at starter, look at Houston's Kevin Walter.

Dude's almost always open because Andre Johnson's catching double and triple coverage all day... definitely a decent FF sleeper.

Also, a dude by the name of Josh Morgan on the 49ers is looking to do big things with Crabtree sitting until maybe September.

Bennett's too obvious. He's gonna have a big year.

I'm going with Doug Free.

I'm hearing good things about him. If true, he's the eventual replacement for Flozell Adams at LT.

Also concerned about depth at OLB, so I'll be paying a lot of attention to rookies Victor Butler and Brandon Williams, who are converted DEs.

Williams tied for 4th in the nation in sacks last year. Butler tied for 6th. If they pan out, I'm giddy about our pass rush the next 5-7 years.

For the Raiders:

Lorenzo Neal, Lets see if he really wants to still play, He has to open up some big holes for Run DMC, and Micheal Bush, He should be fine though.

If he keeps it up, 7th round pick Nick Reed, might be impossible for the Seahawks to cut - he had two sacks and a very nice INT tonight against the Chargers. His ability to produce shouldn't be a total surprise - he did lead the PAC-10 with 13 sacks last year, and I believe he may have the Oregon team record for career sacks. The knock on him are his measurables - he's 6'2 245 and runs some where around a 4.85 40 - but damn he's got a motor. Could be a real sleeper.

He looked good, weren't the announcers talking about how light he was? I wouldn't care if he didn't weigh more if he could play like that.

Falcons LB Stephen Nicholas should be the starter at WLB and is gonna break out I feel. Also undersized CB Brent Grimes is supposed to be a ridiculous athlete. He's only 5'9 but has a 42 inch vert. He missed most of last season and is out of Shippensburgh St. so he's an unknown but the coaches love him and he'll start at CB.

Couple years of strength training will fix that right up.

If the guy is what they call "a football playing dude", regardless of measurables, they'll find a spot for him.

6'2" 245 as a rookie is not bad at all.

I really doubt he will do good, he can jump through the roof but he isn't that good. Chris Owens can play the run well and he is a corner. He got beat deep in the end zone but it was a perfect throw from Matt Stafford.
