The embattled members of Penn State's Board of Trustees quietly have decided to leave Joe Paterno's statue standing -- at least for now and, some hope, forever, according to sources with firsthand knowledge of the trustees' private discussions this week.The trustees' reluctance to remove the statue is motivated, in part, by a desire not to offend alumni and students who adore the late coach despite the damning findings of his role in the Jerry Sandusky child sexual abuse cover-up detailed in the Freeh report, the sources said. Some trustees also said in interviews they want to resist being pressured by the media into a sudden decision about such an emotionally charged issue.

Penn State's student campout group renamed to Nittanyville, People flip out

Penn State's student campout group for football games announced last night they were changing their name from Paternoville to Nittanyville, and we noted the reaction from the PSU community was swift and uncomplimentary. The Nittanyville Facebook page found itself flooded with "Unlike" comments, but plenty of students and fans had more "substantial" things to say. The student club organizers, too, received a plenty of angry email from those who still believe in Paterno's innocence. Here's a sampling of choice comments.

You students are an outright embarrassment to Penn State. You don't deserve the name 'Paternoville' if you don't have the guts to stand up for what's right. Please read the entire Freeh report and note the extreme lack of evidence presented by Freeh against Joepa. Your parents and grandparents who protested in the past at Penn State would be ashamed of you...see Vietnam, apartheid, etc.
I never thought the students at PSU would cave to the media pressure and hype...wow. I'll be sure not to acknowledge you on my weekends at Penn State this year.

Vietnam. Apartheid. The unjust slandering of Joe Paterno's name. These truly are the humanitarian crises of our time. It's worth noting a good number of PSU fans supported the name change, though in the hours following the Nittanyville decision their voices were few and far between when compared to the angry Paterno-supporting masses.

Throw in everything else and you have a program that went to astronomical means to cover things up and make sure that Penn State never looked bad. Now they get their karma and I hope to God that they get the death penalty for allowing such a crooked program to exist.

The entire time most people believed Penn ST. due to Paterno being such a moral guy was a clean program that never had any issues with NCAA penalties, yet now we hear that all of it was simply being covered up. I'm amazed at how well Paterno was able to keep all of these issue under wraps. In this day and age of social media and the sport/program simply being so big that is truly impressive. He must have been even more powerful than I thought, which would explain why the students are acting the way that they are.
