I really hope that this appeal leads to further sanctions. If anything, make it so that the NCAA just drops Penn State and they have to apply for reinstatement in a few years, pending a majority vote by the current members.

its not going to. Everything has been decided. Its over except for waiting the 4 years for it to end. PPenn State wont die. They still have money pouring in and will recover nicely.
an old man was too prideful and made a mistake. Whatever, time marches on. After 2 and 3 years the recruiting will improve again. The Student body wont ignore the team and revenue will be fine.

UNCs violations are worse. The key word violations. PSU was punished because the NCAA thought they had to do something but academic fraud is the worst violation you can commit. Now the actions of some people was worse at penn state but there were no real violations.

While Postal Inspectors have taken the lead in the investigation into possibly mailed material, the FBI was present during the interview of this witness and is continuing to probe.

"This witness has some baggage," the source said. "The Feds are going to need to corroborate what he says. But he is adamant that he is telling the truth. And that raises questions about why he didn't report what he saw at the time.

"Unfortunately he's not the only person involved in this who didn't do the right thing when they should have."

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Joe Paterno sobbed while meeting with his coaches and a former player the day after he was fired from Penn State, according to an excerpt of an upcoming book on Paterno to be published in GQ magazine.

"My name," the Hall of Fame coach was quoted in the excerpt as telling his son and quarterback coach, Jay. "I have spent my whole life trying to make that name mean something. And now it's gone."



Paterno was fired by school trustees in November in the fallout of the Jerry Sandusky child-sex abuse scandal. He died in January at age 85.

Paterno had granted access to journalist Joe Posnanski in 2011 to write a biography. The September issue of GQ features an exclusive excerpt, and the biography will be available in bookstores on Tuesday.

The excerpt described the frantic period on campus after Sandusky's arrest on Nov. 5 after a state grand jury indictment. Another of Paterno's sons, lawyer and lobbyist Scott Paterno, was described as the first member of the family to see the potential that the grand jury report could end his father's career.

At the time, Joe Paterno was coming off his 409th career win, which then made him Division I's winningest coach. The NCAA last month vacated 111 of Paterno's victories as part of sanctions against Penn State for the Sandusky scandal.

"Dad, you have to face the possibility that you will never coach another game," Scott Paterno was quoted as telling his father after reading the grand jury report.

Joe Paterno's relationship with the trustees began to sour after the coach rebuffed suggestions to step down in 2004 from school president Graham Spanier and athletic director Tim Curley. Penn State had just one winning season in five years before Paterno revived the program in 2005 by winning the Big Ten and the Orange Bowl, 26-23 in a triple-overtime classic over Florida State and coaching contemporary Bobby Bowden.

After the scandal broke, the family hired a public relations specialist who at one point asked Penn State football communications and marketing assistant Guido D'Elia for the name of one person on the board to try to negotiate a gracious ending, according to the excerpt.

D'Elia, one of Paterno's closest advisers, shook his head and referred to the coach's 2004 encounter with administrators. "The board started to turn," D'Elia was quoted as saying. "We don't have anybody on the board now."

Paterno, along with Spanier, was ousted Nov. 9. They have not been charged with any crimes.

Curley is on leave after he and now-retired school administrator Gary Schultz were charged with lying to a grand jury and failing to report an abuse allegation.

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing in jail after being convicted in June on 45 criminal counts involving 10 boys.

95% of the book was written before the scandal.

The author has delayed the release because he obvioulsy can't ignore the events of the last year.

There is really no damage to control, people have made up their minds on Paterno, and most have decided he's the epitome of evil. The statue is down (whew! I know i'm sleeping better!), his legacy, fairly or unfairly, is destroyed, the university's reputation, fairly or unfairly, is in shambles, and the football program has been buried.

Spanier says he would have fought NCAA sanctions against Penn State

The NCAA's crippling sanctions against Pennsylvania State University were "unprecedented" and "wrong," the college's former president, Graham B. Spanier, said Thursday, adding that he would have fought harder against them.
In an interview with The Inquirer, the ex-university chief acknowledged the tough task his successor, Rodney Erickson, has faced in shepherding Penn State through the fallout from the Jerry Sandusky child sex-abuse scandal.

But he suggested the university's decision to accept those punishments last month was a misstep. They included a $60 million fine, a four-year postseason ban, and the voiding of 13 years of Joe Paterno's football team wins.

"The NCAA sanctions go well beyond its authority," said Spanier, an ex-NCAA board chair. "What they did to Penn State is unprecedented. It was done without a hearing and due process. I believe it to be wrong."

Spanier made his statements on the second day of a media blitz in which he spoke out for the first time since his resignation in the wake of Sandusky's arrest.

I read the interview Spanier gave to the NYT, I thought the insight on what happened with Paterno in 2004 was interesting. Not sure I'm on board with his defense on the Sandusky stuff. I understand he got hundreds of thousands of emails in 1998 and you can't read all of them, but you would think an email you are copied on that contains allegations of inappropriate behavior in a shower with a minor by an employee (I believe he was at that time) wouldn't be ignored like a spam email about a Macy's 2 day sale.

I'm not saying he knowingly harbored a child rapist, I think Sandusky duped everyone into thinking he was a pillar of that community. But maybe if he didn't ignore that e-mail in 1998 he would of put 2 and 2 together in 2001 and pushed for an investigation.

Spanier's defense of his actions was absurd. Even if all Spanier heard about was Sandusky "horsing around" with an underage child while naked and in the showers...he still should have been fired immediately and it brought to the police. Yeah, sure it's not child rape but it's at best incredibly creepy and inappropriate behavior and at worst still illegal. (Not sure what the actual charges would have been, not sure on Pennsylvania laws)
