Quick NFL thoughts from casual fan

While I won't give Shanahan complete credit for Chip Kelly being hired by the Eagles, the success of the pistol offense by the Redskins, Niners and Panthers definitely led to Kelly's hire by the Eagles.

His offense does some great things, and has a great tempo to it. The Redskins had to establish some time on offense to break it up a little. I have changed my opinion on the success of the offense, but I want to see it in Week 9 or 10 when teams have plenty of film to dissect. That, and his blocking scheme is very simple, it didn't take the Redskins much time to adjust their pressure and find holes, which is going to be key to stopping them.

IIRC, Kaep isn't the even first Harbaugh QB to use the pistol. I'm pretty sure that they ran some aspects of the pistol with Andrew Luck at Stanford. This notion always puzzled me when I would read stories about how Harbaugh and his staff had to "learn it" from Kaep/Ault last season. Maybe it was just writers-being-writers or maybe it's just that the pistol was never used with Luck as extensively as it had been with Kaepernick in Nevada.

Stanford didn't really use the pistol with luck. Maybe a little bit but I don't recall seeing it much and I watched and went to a lot of games.

Palmer is a good NFL qb. I knew he would do well in AZ because he actually had a solid year last season with Oakland who was flat out terrible at the wr position.

The only team that's been worse than the Cards at QB is the Bills. The amount of money they've spent ok quarterbacks since Jim Kelly is insane.

Chip was offered the Bucs job in Jan 2012. He had plenty of NFL attention before RGIII ever played a down.

It was 33-7 by the end of the third quarter...his scheme may be simple but I think the change of pace had a lot more to do with them being stopped in that game vs. some adjustment the Redskins made.

I am curious to see how the NFL adjusts after getting a couple weeks of film. Plus, Vick will not last 16 games in this offense. I'm also curious to see how Chip adjusts to Nick Foles at QB...

I think he was looking for the right situation. Eagles provided a blank slate and an owner and front office willing to spend and put the players he needs on the field. Freeman doesn't fit what he wants to do and the Bucs are committed to him. I think Vick's a stop gap, his QB is still in college. But at least he feels comfortable running his offense with Mike's skillset.

Works been a bitch Mf'er, plus I have kind of lost interest in the game. Took it back in Oct last year and have only played a few games this year. Hoping for improvements on the next gen...

Just the blocking scheme is simple. In my mind, our defense played relatively well. They were hung out to dry in the second and third quarter by an offense that barely moved the ball. I don't think you get the whole 33 points if we actually could move the ball.

He was limping around and made that comment that after the first quarter he was so tired he thought it was halftime. :rudi:

yeah i dont see them keeping that shit up for a full season. they were gassed at halftime. a full year of being beat on trying to keep that pace...no fucking way.
it works in college when 80% of your schedule is full of HS level teams.

vick will get killed at some point. he always does. Same with RG3.

I meant blocking scheme...

I guess I could turn around and say if the offense didn't slow down to kill clock and the defense didn't go in prevent in the middle of the third quarter, they would of won by 30 points.

You have a point with prevent. I don't believe in it unless you are up by a substantial amount within the last seven minutes of the fourth. Going into prevent in the third quarter was a huge mistake, and I think every team makes it. It just doesn't make sense, especially with the high-powered passing offenses in the NFL now.

It had more to do with roster size than the scheduling because the top teams play each other anyway.

Those Oregon teams were loaded with depth at the offensive skill positions so guys could stay fresh. More importantly on defense they could go three to four deep at every spot in the front 7 so guys could get a blow.

That's not happening with a 53 man roster.

This doesn't even make any sense.

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady are football computers...they essentially run the offense themselves...their success running ANYTHING doesn't get coaches hired from the college level.

Chip Kelly was hired because he's A) qualified and B) runs an offense the NFL is drifting toward. The Buccaneers tried to hire him...and then the Eagles finally did...and it was because he could bring a certain type of play style teams feel he can succeed with in this era of the NFL.
