Rays will send James Shields and Wade Davis to Royals for Wil Myers other prospects

Saw this shit on Draysbay.com a few days ago and had to screen cap it.

That's the bad part, because Moore is being quoted by multiple people as saying his major league roster was untouchable this off-season, so he essentially wanted to trade Myers. Just absolutely stupid.

For real, Wil Myers is going to be a beast in the majors for a long time and all they give up is a pitcher they were going to get rid of within 2 years anyway and a 27-year old pitcher who will be making a lot of money in a couple years, too.

The Royals probably insisted on Wade Davis being included b/c the Rays did sign him to a 6-year extension last season. So he will have a team-friendly contract for the Royals which DM can flaunt around like he won something over on the Rays.

Yeah, this is a very short sighted trade which would make sense if the Royals were on the cusp of anything. I mean, MAYBE they contend in the AL Central this year but I wouldn't bet on it.

Pretty awful trade for the Royals but that's pretty much what we're use to seeing and hearing at this point.

Odorizzi is going to be a solid rotation arm for a long time. Myers is good, but I'm not sold on him being an uberstud. Montgomery has fallen on hard times. He's more of a name at this point than a top line prospect.

Shields can be very good.

Not as lopsided as ya'll are making it out to be...but I think Odorizzi is the piece that puts this in favor of the Rays. I think Myers/Montgomery for Shields is pretty fair, throw in Davis for Odorizzi and it gives the Rays the edge.

I think the Rays come out way ahead in the deal. Granted, I am coming from a biased POV, but, stepping back from it, I still see a much better deal for the Rays. Even with Montgomery's struggles, the Royals have issues with developing pitchers. The Rays don't. We have grabbed guys off the scrap-heap and once they work with Jim Hickey, they blossom. Not saying this will definitely happen with Montgomery, but, he is a LHP and he does have some skill. I think working with a new set of instructors may be a possible remedy. Add in Myers and Odorizzi and the Rays made out better than I would have expected.

Myers for Shields wasn't only straight-up deal Royals tried. KC offered Wil Myers to Oakland for Brett Anderson and were turned down, too.

Montgomery's stock as a prospect has fallen hard. Two seasons in a row with an ERA well over 5 and his command has been shakey. I don't want to call him a throw-in, because he's got some upside, but for the Royals, its obvious that they don't see him in a good light at this point...and the rest of baseball shouldn't either. He could still be good, but its far from a certainty.

Myers is going to be good, but perhaps, not the superstar fans project him to be. Odorizzi, IMO, is going to a solid, mid-rotation arm for a good while in MLB.

If the Royals get peak James Shields...its a good deal for them, too.

I don't disagree with this statement, because Shields is a very good #2 pitcher, but the problem is this trade isn't going to put the Royals over the top. If this was a contending team that needed one player to put them over the edge, then yes, I would say this trade would be fair both sides, even though it is a steep price regardless.

But the Royals aren't even close to contention and they trade 2 of their top 5 prospects, including one of the top prospects in baseball for a guy who is over 30 under control for just 2 more years. All so they can go from winning 70 games to winning 75 MAYBE 80 games and still missing the playoffs.

It's a stupid trade, and it reeks of desperation from the Royals front office.

They weren't GIVING him away, either...they turned down a deal that would have sent RA Dickey to KC for him.

The Royals were determined to get a 1/2 SP as well as SP depth (look at all of the rumored SP they have been looking at)...in the trade market, it essentially came down to Myers or Butler as the trading chip to move...they weren't moving Escobar...the price for Hosmer was way off from what I've read...and are just "listening to offers" for the rest of their young players.

One of them were getting moved for a pitcher...I think they made the right decision in WHO to move and I think they got the best possible pitcher they could for him.

If Shields & Davis is robbery, who did people think they were going to get for him? What would have been "fair"? David Price? Felix Hernandez? Clayton Kershaw? Who?

Not sure this would be viewed as such a horrible deal if this was 15 years ago and nobody had their noses buried in prospect books every winter. Writers talk them up to get page hits and sell books, and fans end up overrating these guys because we are constantly being told how great they are.
