Figured VSN could finally use one of these.

Post anything retro gaming, whether it's a game you're currently playing, a deal you got on a retro game, collecting, you watched a retro game stream. From NES (or prior) to PS2 and OG Xbox. Whatever. Let's talk about old games, fellas.

So, is anybody playing some older non-current-gen games right now (and they can't be HD versions on current-gen)?

My friends and I have been playing a lot of Super Smash Bros on the N64 lately. Very competitive 4-player game with a lot of bragging rights on the line.

I'm currently playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on the PS2. Man, the platforming in this game is just fantastic. Back when platforming wasn't just so straight forward and you had to actually think about it. You can tell how much these Ubisoft games influenced the earlier Assassin's Creed games. Tough platforming that you had to think about (then it was mysteriously gone in AC3 :smh.

Still waiting on the Retron 5 to release so I can finally start my Link to the Past playthrough. I'd love to just have all the retro consoles I wanted, but I don't want to deal with all the clutter lol since I already have 5 working consoles (and a broken NES ).

When I was at the vintage store last weekend picking up a few PS2 games, I came across a boxed copy of Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr. for the N64. I almost bought it, as it was only like $5, but I don't have an N64 (even though I did buy a boxed copy of Goldeneye lol). Played that game soooo much as a kid.

Found my wife's old NES over the holiday in her dad's garage, so I hooked it up for my daughter and we've been playing all SMB 1,2 and 3 as well as Donkey Kong. Still a pain the ass to get games working between the blinking light and having to move the cartridge around to get a good contact.

Alright, it's time to revive this thread. I know there are some people here who still enjoy going back to the good old days.

Mostly been making purchases for PS2/Xbox and PSX lately. Starting to compile a list for N64 games, though I'm still looking for a console at the right price. Also just acquired a Gamecube and have a couple purchases for that and am actively searching for a good price on Wind Waker. My most recent purchases (minus the Gamecube console) include Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Resident Evil REmake, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb, Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, GTA 3/GTA VC/GTA SA for PS2 all three in excellent condition and Rainbow Six for the PSX. Oh, and almost forgot, I did just purchase Thief: Deadly Shadows for the Xbox for like $5.

Still trying to decide if I want to go the route of the Retron 5 this winter or just collect the actual consoles that I want. Although either way, I'd like to see some reviews for that first.

I just started Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb on the PS2 and I'm finding it pretty fun so far. Adventure games are my absolute favorite, especially these types of treasure hunting games, so I'm excited to keep playing.

This is a great post, but I will focus on two parts: 1) the upside to the Retron is the fact that a lot of new TVs (mine included, made in 2013) simply do not have anything lower than component cable inputs. Our dual NES/SNES thing has to go into our old 32" bedroom TV, which sucks. I don't know how a component HDMI cable will make things look, but at this point when you're retro gaming, I'd prefer to be able to play in the living room than have to find some other means to do so. So my overarching point is: getting the original systems can be needlessly costly and will force you to also have an older TV (the latter isn't too much of an issue now, but I feel like it will be someday) -- take it from someone that tried to create an 80's room in his basement.

2) and this one is totally lame and bitchy (PC gamer in me I guess), but that Indiana Jones game is not an adventure game. I know, I know, I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself

EDIT: Also, aren't you in college? How are you affording all of this?

The other upside to the Retron that I just thought of: you can pick up the GBA version of a lot of SNES games that are super expensive at this point. Final Fantasy VI for example, can get pricey for a SNES cart, but the GBA version (which is superior in almost every way -- translation, extra dungeons) is usually not too bad. It might not seem like much, but they made a SHITLOAD of those GBA games, and they're newer which means that there are more working ones out there, so it will inevitably be cheaper.

I guess the question is, do you want to play these games, collect these games, or both? And if both, do you care how your collection "looks"? (having a bunch of a GBA boxes isn't quite as nerd-sexy as a bunch of SNES boxes)

Completely forgot about the whole HDMI thing in the Retron 5 for the moment. Yeah, as long as it doesn't bomb in reviews, I'll likely go that way. That just makes everything super easy. I do have a tube TV, but it'd still be nice to just hook everything up to the plasma TV and have it still look nice. Plus it still allows for the original controllers for that proper feel lol.

I hadn't even thought about the GBA/SNES thing. I mean, it'd be nice to have the original carts, but there's just no way I'm going to pay some of the ridiculous prices for those rare SNES carts, so the GBA carts would be a great option so I could play them. Thanks for pointing that out, as I mentioned, that was something I definitely hadn't thought of.

As for the EDIT question: No, I'm out of school. I mostly do some freelance editing and media layout design right now along with writing for a small gaming website (while looking for something else too). Plus I look around like crazy for most of the old stuff I want and can usually find it somewhere for dirt cheap. I also focus on the cheapest stuff, like PS2/Xbox and PSX/N64 since those aren't really what the collector's are going for right now. Outside of picking up Link to the Past and Super Star Wars earlier this year, I've stayed far away from SNES games b/c of that.

Nice! Sounds like you're doing pretty well for yourself. I apologize if that question was a little uncouth. It's been a long, stressful week of animals and idiot owners, and I had my first beer at 5:15 (arrived home at 5:14) and haven't stopped since.

It works, but I still want to find something else besides just doing freelance crap. I hate having to continually find new projects on my own. Love the writing gig though.

One of the best, and weirdest, late gen SNES games. So clever. The localization was amazing, considering the time.

LOL. I just found my wife's NES in the same manner. I played some Bad News Baseball, Jackal and the some Baseball Stars. I had a few freezes but was able to reset the console and get things working again. But since yesterday I can't get it to work at all. Nothing but a blinking power light. The thing is stored away for decades and works when I first hook it up but now nothing. Ugh.

The RetroN5 can't get here soon enough.

I think Best Buy, or maybe Amazon, had one of the more recent DS/3DS Castlevania games for really cheap.

I am back into my 3DS after getting the Zelda one. I bought the NES version Kid Icarus from the E-shop and loving it. This was my first game I got for my NES. My dad brought me to Kmart and told me I could pick out 1 game and I remember looking down through the glass case and for some reason unbeknownst to me I pick Kid Icarus. Oh the memories!

Oh yeah...this game is not easy.

Yeah, I remember almost everyone saying that not only is that game hard as balls but that it just doesn't hold up. I downloaded it from the VC on Wii and hated it. I played it as a kid and remember enjoying it. Not so much now.
