Rookie CB Could Start For Atlanta

Falcons rookie cornerback Chris Owens has a chance to win a starting job with the team.

Brent Grimes, Chevis Jackson, Von Hutchins and Owens will compete for the starting right corner job in the wake of Domonique Foxworth's free agent departure.

Sources claim that Falcons coach Mike Smith would be pleased if Owens, a third-round pick, stepped up and beat out the veterans for the job.

Chevis isn't exactly a veteran, he's a youngster himself. If Chris Owens is competing for the job that is both a good and bad thing. Obviously I'd be happy if he panned out but after seeing journeymen like Grimes and Hutchins out there last year I was really hoping for more of an upgrade.

Chevis is a tad slow and every other CB we have is undersized. I like Owens ok as a player but am really not looking forward to our secondary again this year.

Chevis is a straight playmaker. He doesn't have great speed, but he's got everything else. I like him over Owens long-term. Chevis also came out in a LOADED CB draft last year, compared to this class that was pretty poor really. Not saying you can't find a solid player in a below-average class, but that Chevis may be a real quality prospect who got a little lost in the shuffle. Talent-wise, he's better than Owens.

False. Owens has incredible awareness and is outstandingly quick to recover after any mistakes he does manage to make. I like Owens in this one.

He and Dwight Lowery were very good at SJSU, Owens had seemingly often been overlooked with Lowery and then Coye Francies playing opposite him, but Owens been doing it for a while now and he's pretty good.

Wouldn't shock me if he was starting by at least mid-year.

He came to mini camp a couple years back 20 pounds overweight. Falcons just got rid of him. He's on the 49ers now.

I think he was cut recently by San Francisco. If he smoked too much pot in Atlanta I don't know why a team in Cali would even bother. Apparently the Niners no longer are because I read somewhere that he was cut a few weeks back.
