Rubio Staying Europe for 2 More Years

The Minnesota Timberwolves' top draft pick, Ricky Rubio, 18, will remain in Spain to play for his DKV Joventut basketball team for the remaining two years of his contract rather than try to move to the NBA this season, El Periodico reported today.

The Barcelona newspaper also says Rubio, who was paid $97,000 last season, plans to withdraw his contract lawsuit against DKV Joventut.

yeah, I dont really think the wolves front office are against this at all. I think it would be good for Rubio to get a few more years in to work on other parts of his game.

I am just annoyed that I can't see what this guy has to offer for another 2 years. All this hype around this kid and we don't even get to see a little bit? Don't go comparing him to Pistol Pete and then tell me he has to go play in Europe for 2 more years to be ready. I hate you ESPN.

It really isn't though. He can still gain valuable experience in Spain playing against the guys over there and increase his trade value come 2010. The T'Wolves aren't contending anytime soon so it's not that big of a deal and David Kahn made that point very clear.
 
Umm... he isn't staying in Spain to get experience (although that is a perk), he is staying because he would have to pay 6 million dollars to his Spanish club and probably wouldn't make any money if he were to come to Minnesota.

Smart move by him, but it kind of sucks for Minnesota.
 
Another thing, it's from a Spanish news station so part of me wants to say the information may be inaccurate. Nothing is out of the realm of possibility though. oh well.

Right. There is no contract deal in place. The Wolves own his rights as it stands now. If anyone wants Rubio they'll have to purchase him from the T'Wolves.
 
I guess not. Euro guys are always kinda weird but I think he'll stay under their control but he does not get paid.
 
The Wolves picked Rubio for his trade potential and Flynn to be their starting PG. Having Rubio stay overseas, maturing and improving his game only helps the Wolves. He's a talented kid who will only get better, so teams will be ready to throw something the Wolves way when Rubio's DKV Joventut is up in 2 years. Either way, though at that time they'll know what type of player Flynn will be and be able to make a choice.
 
You still think he's going to want to come to the Wolves when he gets back?

I think it's just his ploy to get the Wolves to trade his rights to New York/LA.
