Rutgers Defensive Tackle Paralyzed from Neck Down

A Rutgers player injured making a tackle on a kickoff return sustained a horrific neck injury that has left him paralyzed below the neck.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano says defensive tackle Eric LeGrand is resting in the intensive care unit at Hackensack University Medical Center and will remain there for the near future.

LeGrand had emergency surgery overnight to stabilize the spine.

Schiano, who had tears in his eyes during his press conference following Rutgers 23-20 overtime win over Army, talked to his team around noon on Sunday.

He graduated from my school...this town is devastated. The only product out of my school to ever have a chance at the NFL. He's a great kid and its horrible to see him go down like this. He's gone through so much at Rutgers football wise and changing positions. Finally found a home for him at DT. Prolly woulda started next year full time after Noonan left. Can't believe it...

I've seen something like this happen as well, then was in the stands for that game when he led us out onto the field. Just believe, he'll be able to walk again if he puts his mind to it.

I haven't heard...were they able to give him that one shot where if it's administered quickly it greatly helps his recovery chances?

That I don't know and probably wouldn't be able to figure out. Keep him in your prayers, however. I'm not a religious person, but it seems to be working since he regained a little movement today.

Tomorrow at school everyone is supposed to wear red or a Rutgers shirt. Apparently, there's going to be counselors there. Don't know why since the current seniors were just freshman when he was in HS but guess it could help. Remember my freshman year me and him wore the same Larry Fitzgerald jersey on the same day three of four times. Never said anything though cuz I was a scared freshman looking up to this 6' senior.
