Think a lot of the intrigue comes from that... there is little game tape so to some teams his ceiling may be higher than a 3-4 year starter who may seem to be maxed out. And just due to this draft class... if Barkley had come out Tannehill wouldn't be close to discussed int he first round.

Yep, I remember right back before Barkley and Landry Jones said they would stay at their schools for next season, most mocks had the Redskins taking Tannenhill in the second, or trading up to the late first for him. It is definitely due to a weak class, but each year it seems some quarterback has a meteoric rise up the board.

He was always a QB, he moved to WR for two years because TAMU had Jarrod Johnson (who would be in the NFL right now had he not injured his shoulder), and since Tannehill was such a great athlete, they wanted him on the field in some capacity.

I'm not a big fan of the guy, but he's getting a lot of love because he has a cannon for an arm.. tremendous athleticism and a lot of upside (draftnik term). Not to mention he did play QB in a pro-style offense under Mike Sherman.

I think him being selected high would likely be a detriment to him though, because there would probably be a rush to put him on the field. He needs to polish up his game and watch from the sidelines for a year or two before he can be an effective QB IMO..

Lack of experience is really the only negative he has. The physical attributes are certainly there. He just has a lot to learn about playing the position. Given how quickly he seemed to progress under center at A&M, I think teams are intrigued by how fast he might be able to learn and get better at the NFL level.

All depends on what team he goes to and what kind of players around him. I didn't think Andy Dalton would be great, and he was able to get it done Year 1...they had the right guys around him.

Ok, I just went through like 20 youtube vids, and read a few scouting report. No way this kid should be in the top 10, let alone the first round.

I am 100% convinced this kid is a 2nd day pick.

The mechanics just aren't there, I mean he's not Tebow bad, but he's not great either. Velocity is good, not great. His deep accuracy sucks, he under throws a lot of passes, with too much air under the ball, resulting in bonehead ints, or overthrows them entirely. He has a sidearm throwing action when on the run which could be seen as a bad thing. He is very lean for a mobile QB, and he'll have to add some size in order to live in the NFL. The only upside is he's come along and learned to read a college level defense, but the jump to pro defenses is immense. I can't imagine it will be as easy for him to learn to read and react to the NFL schemes anytime soon. He's a prospect QB, period.

He is without a doubt a round 3 QB IMO. I think he's being pumped up full of a lot of hot air right now.

Tannehill is an even bigger reach in the first round then Tebow was, mainly because an athletic QB is trending in the NFL right now.

LUCK/RGIII are superior athletlets/QB's...

Tannehill is riding the coat tails of Cam Newton's BRILLIANCE and Tebow's post season success/marketing.

DC's in the NFL have exploited "pocket passers" lack of mobility, forcing offensive minded brain trusts to seek out great athletes that can also pass the ball.

IMHO, it's obvious a new breed of Superior athlete is trending at QB, to combat the super athletes at DE and CB. This will causes teams to reach for a QB like Tebow or Tannehill.


*Good (not great) athletes with strength/size/speed at the offensive tackle position have also benefited.

Tannehill is riding the coattails of the new rookie salary structure.

Much like last season, teams are now willing to reach on QBs earlier in the draft because it doesn't come with a franchise crippling cap figure. Couple that with the growing need for finding a QB, that the "next guy on the board" always gets pushed up. After Tannehill comes off the board, the next guy up, Brandon Weeden will be pushed up. He's a good quarterback, but old. Normally, a 3rd round type, mostly due to his age (he's a good quarterback prospect regardless), not, gets pushed up the board...now people are saying he's an early Round 2 player.

Mobile QB that can make plays on the run. The intangible factor is good, he can make throws on the run, but that sidearm action he has when on the run could be a problem or it could be one of the Favre things that just work. IDK. I think he's got decent accuracy short, puts good velocity on the ball, but anything deep looks inaccurate and if he were on my team every time I see that deep ball I'd gasp. Sorry, I'll stay positive. He looks like he could be good someday. But in the NFL, project players shouldn't be rated top 10 pre-draft IMO. He might be a solid QB or better someday.

Agree with a lot of this.. hence why I said I think he's better served going later in the first round (because he's going Round 1 no matter what) and sitting on the bench for a year or two.

Aaron Rodgers had some bad mechanics when he came in as well. He definitely improved those while riding the bench. Would the same thing have happened had he gone #1 to San Fran and played almost immediately? Hard to say.

I bring Rodgers up because I think Tannehill has a lot of that same potential.. but if Tannehill goes to Cleveland or Miami and plays before he can develop.. it could definitely hurt the guys career. If he went to say, a Kansas City.. a Philadelphia.. etc - I think he'd be much better off.

Larry is right though, the quarterback position will ALWAYS be overrated .. couple that with a much friendlier rookie cap and you will begin to see these prospects with a lot of question marks start to go very high in the draft.
