Should the NFL expand to 18 regular season games?

Let's use the Dolphins as an example. Chad Henne is no Tom Brady. Neither is whoever is starting at guard or Brian Hartline their second receiver or their young corners, the couple of rookies the Dolphins have in the front 7. Randy Starks moving from end to nose. My bet is a lot of these types of players would benefit from a couple more preseason games.

I don't know about more preseason games.

But I can guarntee you the Dolphins are gonna put great use to these 4 pre-season games.

When your team isn't full of pro-bowlers and run by a future HOF. The decision for starter isn't always that easy. I can guarantee the coaches wanna decide on all starting jobs before the season starts. Otherwise they're already behind still trying to decide if the 3rd corner is better then the 2nd one. Pre-season games make that decision alot more easy, which mean they have a purpose.

1. Noones supposed to care about the preseason other than the damn players and coaches. Its not for US or the owners wallet. Its the greedy ass owners who are trying to sell it as a "full" product that are against it. They arent getting the full revenue so theyd rather make it a "real" game with no long term view. It was never meant to be sold as a "real" game.


2. Of course the NFL is a business. What kind of shitty business doesnt realize when they are fuckin with a product for the sake of money. How many bars have lost customers because they went too far watering down drinks ?
The NFL is what it is because of quality and scarcity.
They managed to reach a competitive schedule and team balance no other league has had in decades , maybe ever. Why fuck it up for a few extra dollars ? You risk losing what you have.

Records become meaningless.
Quality of play first few weeks will suffer.
Even more meaningless games at the end of the season.
Instead of a 4 month season and a 1 month post season you stretch the regular season into late summer and late winter.


3. Preseason at 3-4 games is fine. Free agency all but demands these games to get new players into new systems. The quality of depth and potential for breakout stars begins to deteriorate when you cut it down to 2.
THERE IS NOTHING THAT PREPARES YOU LIKE LIVE FULL SPEED COMPETITION.
I dont want more...but exchanging preseason for regular season is asking for trouble.

Baseball/NBA/NHL retardation should be proof positive of why this mentality of more is always better doesnt work.
If anything there should be contraction and 154 game seasons in baseball. Everyone but the contracted teams would benefit but it wont happen.
NFL will be in a situation of watered down meaningless games for too much of the season. Star players will get hurt with greater frequency.
They've already had to change the scheduling in weeks 16-17 because of outcries last 2 years.

Theyve already outlawed defense.
The overwhelming proof of brain damage is already going to lead to changes in rules and equipment.

NFL should be more worried about rookies not destroying NFL pay scales and making sure the looming health issues dont drastically change the nature of the game.

I think with only two teams will look really sloppy the first few weeks of the season more than they normally do and I think tons of teams won't be able to fully evaluate young talent and end up having to release players that with four games would otherwise make the roster.

The league as a whole will be making more money therefore the bottom of the barrel players will probably remain the same, middle of the pack players will make a little more and so on.

The players will demand more money and if what you say ends up happening, the league and owners don't want to pay the players anymore money you can expect to see a player strike reminiscent of the 1982 season.

The players will never agree to this unless they get a bigger piece of the pie, and some form of roster expansion to create jobs. I thought this was obvious.

One scenrio that could work, would be expanded rosters for the first 2 or 3 or 4 weeks of the season, which would allow the teams to "get back" the lost evaluation period caused by cutting the preseason. And i'm pretty sure that a 53 man gameday roster will be a given, which will allow teams to use more special teams specific players and not be forced to use regulars in those spots.

Preseason allowed three players on our roster to show what they could do as "bubble" guys. I honestly believe if not for what they had shown in that limited action they would never be what they are today.
