Should the Vikings take Andrew Luck?

With the Colts winning tonight against the Texans and having a very good shot at 3 wins this season it seems like Andrew Luck will not be heading to Indianapolis. The two new teams in the race for first place are the Rams and Vikings. Obviously with Sam Bradford's large contract this would restrict them from selecting a quarterback in the 1st round. This brings us to the Minnesota Vikings. Should the Vikings build around Christian Ponder who was a surprise first round pick in the 2011 draft or do they select the "once in a decade prospect" Andrew Luck?

If their line is decent, I would go with Luck but if it's horrible, I would trade it to go down a couple of spots and stock up on picks for this years and next years draft. Maybe even get RG III if you really want a QB, while getting picks.

Luck isn't going to fall to #2. If the Rams get #1 they are going to trade down. If no takers, then they'll draft him.

From what I understand, strength of schedule is the first tiebreaker for draft pick position. Anyone know where I can find the current strength of schedule numbers?

On NFL Network, they mentioned how one reporter was saying the #1 pick could be traded for three #1s.

Would be awfully enticing if Minnesota gets it. If St. Louis should get the pick somehow, they trade it definitely.

Take him and call them or Miami in full-on hostage situation mode, Hank Scorpio style. I don't know if they'd give up three 1sts, but probably two 1sts and a 2nd for Luck and a 3rd or 4th. You're not just buying a technically sound, elite prospect. You're buying immediate new interest in your fanbase and media coverage.

My thinking is, if you take a quarterback in the first round, you expect him to be your guy.

Not saying it's the best decision, or the right decision, but they'll stay with Ponder. They believe he's the guy. They wouldn't have drafted him otherwise.

I think you HAVE to take Luck no matter what your predicament at the quarterback position. He's that special of a player and you're not handcuffed by a $60M+ contract anymore.

I can see why the Rams would trade out, because Sam Bradford has a huge contract and has nothing around him so a trade could net some much needed weapons (Blackmon and OL).. but the Vikings? You take Andrew Luck in a heartbeat.

The problem is that Ponder has little to no trade value, and you're paying him too much to make him a backup to Luck. I would think you trade the pick for a buttload of assets, and if Ponder does turn out to suck, chances are you'll be right back in the Barkley sweep stakes the following year, or the Zach Mettenberger sweep stakes the year after. shifty
