When Lisa's brother in law shot himself in the mouth at the end of the 4th season, my jaw dropped and stayed in the same position for the rest of the episode. No h.

Im a bump this because I watched the first season 3 years ago and didn't like it that much but I recently gave the show a second chance and just fucking blazed through it. It took me about 2 weeks to watch but technically watched them faster than that because I would start a season at say 8pm on a WED and finish the season by 2-3 pm the next day. Then give myself a 2-3 day break and watch each season in one large chunk at a time.

 

It blows my mind that this show only won 2 acting Emmy and they were both from Patrica Clarkson, who while good, was never anything to brag about in the show. Peter Krause has got to have one of the best TV careers in the business today. He went from Sports Night to Six Feet Under to parenthood and is still good enough to find a show w/e NBC decides to end Parenthood. As Adam he was my favorite character to start the show off because he was so much more different and energetic than the rest of the characters. To think about him at the start of the series now that I finished the show, its crazy just how much he changed. I feel like that energy he was so full of was just sucked out of him to the point where his fate wasn't such a tragedy despite everything he left behind. Don't get me wrong, I felt bad for everyone because of what they lost when he died, but for him personally, it was kind of an escape.

Michael C Hall was kind of the opposite. I was a little weary of him at first because he was this constrained closeted gay, but once he came out, he was able to do a lot more. Then by the end of the series he was my favorite character. The real turning point was when he got carjacked and kidnapped. That episode really gave his character a lot of juicy story line arcs and that episode has serious consequences for David the rest of the show. I really enjoyed where Keith and David wound up. At the start, their bickering and on/off again relationship was repetitive but the last 2 seasons found a great stride for them as a couple. They handled them so well, the last season I never even thought twice about them and their gay things. I never found myself saying "thats really gay". Michael C Hall as David will forever shit on Michael C Hall as Dexter.

As for Claire, it was really all about who was her boyfriend at the time on whether I liked her or not. When she had a guy I liked like Gabe, Billy or Chris Messina, I liked her. When she was with Ben Foster, or Jimmy, she got a tad bit annoying. The art school passion was really nailed down, but the gripe with that is I hate those art school people. They act so fucking cool, I want to just punch them in the faces. I viewed that as a positive whenever I wanted to do that with her and her friends. She was a great crier on the show.

Ruth. O Ruth. maybe its because I am not a 60 year old widower, but I could never relate with her. She had her fair share of moments that I liked, but she got a bit repetitive with her story arcs. She just moved on from man to man, which I can understand when shes been with the same man for 40 years, but it still got repetitive to know full well every relationship she was getting into was going to fail.

Brenda. I hated you. I hated your mother. Still felt bad for you when it was all said and done.

Rico was fun in the early seasons of the show but once they worked him in with bigger plot points, his damn wife brought him down. First she was depressed and made life miserable for him so of course he cheated on her. Then when he gets her through the depression, she makes his life even more hell. Its hard to watch that kind of story line when you are on Rico's side. I was kind of disappointed that he split from Fisher after Nate's death, but you got to do what you got to do. I would hope that he and David remained friends until their respective deaths, but he came off a little selfish near the end there and feel like they drifted apart.

The series, despite a few problems, entertained the hell out of me. The really great shows are ones where there are multiple characters you care so much for and Six Feet Under nailed that. This show used death as a great plot device. It was a little manipulative with it, but when it relates back to the story-line so well, it doesn't matter. They had a slew of dead characters appear many times or just once and impact the moment so easily. Richard Jenkins, despite being killed in the pilot was such a huge part of this show and ironically the hear of the show despite his not beating. His flashbacks sequences were great character shaping moments for his family, but when he got in the heads of them with that manipulating technique SFU nailed, it was glorious. He wouldn't even have to say things at times to pull at you. His mere presence changed the thought dynamic of the scene you were watching. It makes me appreciate him much more as an actor now. Hollywood needs to give this guy more chances to lead movies rather than forgettable secondary characters he usually tends to get.

I was really excited for the finale. I will throw this out there right now and not mention it again, but whenever I hear about finales, The Shield, The Sopranos, and this show are the ones that usually get named first when speaking of GOAT. I will say without doubt, The Shield has yet to be topped, but this was pretty fucking great as well. The fact that Nate died episodes prior kind of makes everything after that less of a shock. It can really only go down. And it seemed like the show wasn't heading anywhere amazing with the next 3 episodes but then Claire gets in that car and the fucking montage begins. It was kind of crazy how quickly it went from being a good to great finale into an amazing one with just a small 6 minute conclusion, but its revelation for this show ended perfectly. Death was always coming for them, some sooner than later and in the end it consumed each and every one of them. The minor moments at their deaths gave some indication of their lives and I felt satisfied with that. They had moved on with it and finally lived. It was such a great closing moment to a great show that really seems to get pushed out of sight and mind. When talking about great shows, this should come up in the discussion. It isn't the best but it has at least earned to be apart of the discussion.

My parting words for this little thoughts of the series is how the fuck did Alan Ball go from this to True Blood. Even at its best, True Blood wasn't even close to be as good as Six Feet Under's worst.
