Snyder vs. Shanahan

While some observers and analysts were opining that Redskins coach Mike Shanahan should be fired for the way he allowed Robert Griffin III to play injured in the playoff game vs. Seattle last year, eventually hurting himself again, Shanahan apparently was thinking about leaving the team of his own volition.

And it was reportedly because of the relationship between Griffin and Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.

Shanahan reportedly was disillusioned with the reverential way Snyder treated Griffin, and partially because of that, he had cleaned out his office before the team's playoff game and was ready to resign, reports ESPN's Dan Graziano.

Here were some of the reported problems:

• Shanahan believed Snyder's relationship with Griffin was a "complete farce" because of the way the team owner "empower[ed] his quarterback and help[ed] make him feel bigger than the team." One example was the day when backup Kirk Cousins led the team to a win against the Browns after Griffin had been injured, but in the postgame locker-room scene, Snyder reportedly ignored Cousins so he could talk to Griffin. Snyder also apparently sent his personal driver to pick up Griffin's significant other for road games and sent out his security detail to accompany Griffin when he went out for the night in Washington.

• By quitting after a 10-6 record, an NFC East title and a playoff appearance, Graziano writes that Shanahan felt like he was leaving the team on a positive upswing. "He believed the team had come together and shown strong character during the seven-game winning streak on which it ended the regular season," Graziano writes. But when Griffin hurt himself -- which cast much of the blame on Shanahan -- he changed his mind, because he feared the implication would be that he was leaving because of the injury.

• Shanahan declined comment for the story, and Redskins spokesman Tony Wylie said, "That story is ridiculous."

Maybe it is, but maybe it isn't. But is it out of the realm of possibility? Some observers are skeptical.

Redskins are possibly thinking of firing Shanahan "for cause" saying he leaked that story to get out. Allen and Snyder were at Redskins Park late last night examining all of their options on how to proceed. The Washington Post posted an online article basically disproving everything in the article above, and agreeing with the assertion that Shanahan leaked this.

Meanwhile, Shanahan has a presser today, where he doesn't commit on RGIII as QB for the rest of the year, saying Cousins could start and the team could shut down RGIII for the rest of the year.

Snyder's turn for a rebuttal has to be coming soon.

With thoughts of benching Griffin something is certainly going on. Griffin has struggled, but he isn't the problem. I don't get all of this anti Griffin talk from fans and the organization here in NoVa. It seems Shanny is trying to force his way out by using Griffin. What a mess this organization is.

Very true, we were lucky to even bring back our own FA's, and lost one of our leaders in Lorenzo Alexander, who didn't even get big money from leaving. Also agree heavily with Danny Smith, but we also left ourselves without any sort of return game. Coverage has still been awful.

Just fire him and bring on the Baylor coach for next year.

I might just give up on the team if that's the case. If Snyder is truly going to let a coach coach, he can't seem to be placating to Griffin and bringing in the coach of his college team.

There has been anti-Griffin talk all season. Even on ESPN, though, for obvious reasons, more on WJFK.

Honestly, Griffin has not progressed as a passer. His knee is not allowing him to run like last year. Couple those two things with defenses adjusting to the option-read offense, and it's not wonder. Griffin is so used to faking the handoff and having his guy open that he never learned how to work through his progressions and receiver routes. And, this is just my opinion, but I think his knee and the brace bother him more than he admits and it's effecting his accuracy.

Now you add in Shanahan's need to be a control freak and Griffin's larger than life personality and you get a mess. Especially when it's becoming more and more obvious that the stories about Shanny wanting Tannehill over Griffin may in fact be true.

While the salary cap hit is a big part of it, Shanahan is more than a scapegoat. He continues to try and manipulate through the media. He wouldn't fire Haslett, despite it being obvious that the 3-4 defense under him was not playing like it should. Then there is his son's playcalling, which has sucked. When your QB is clearly struggling, you need to give him short, easy throws. On top of that, Morris has been running quite well and, for whatever reason, they abandon him for long stretches.

Redskins to start Kirk Cousins

Kirk Cousins will replace Robert Griffin III at quarterback Sunday when the Washington Redskins face the Atlanta Falcons, a high-ranking team official confirmed to ESPN.com.

NFL Network had earlier reported that Cousins would start in Atlanta.

Coach Mike Shanahan raised the possibility Monday of benching Griffin for the last three regular-season games, citing 24 sacks in the past five games and the desire to keep him healthy for the offseason. The quarterback's offseason work this year was compromised by the major knee injury he suffered in the team's playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks in January.

A team source on Tuesday said owner Dan Snyder would not intervene if Shanahan decided to make the switch at quarterback.

Cousins was the second quarterback the Redskins took in the 2012 draft, going to Washington in the fourth round after the team took Griffin No. 2 overall. He appeared in three games last season, leading the Redskins to a victory over the Baltimore Ravens after Griffin left with an injury and starting the next week against the Cleveland Browns, another Redskins victory. He finished the season with 466 yards on 33-of-48 passing with four touchdowns and three interceptions.

He has appeared in two games this season, including in a mop-up role last Sunday in a blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shanahan, whose job security has been a topic of widespread scrutiny, said Monday he spoke with Snyder that morning, and that if he switched quarterbacks, he'd discuss it first with the owner.

As for Shanahan's future with the Redskins, team sources said Tuesday that everything is "status quo." His status for next season entering last weekend was questionable. It was downgraded to doubtful after an ESPN.com report Sunday detailing his displeasure over the nature of the Griffin-Snyder relationship.

Washington (3-10) was trounced 45-10 by the Chiefs later Sunday, a loss that followed a number of stories in recent weeks discussing the nature of Shanahan's relationship with Griffin as well as that between his son, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, and Griffin.

Shanahan has one year and $7 million left on his contract. The Redskins are 24-37 under Shanahan and clinched their third double-digit loss season in his four years as coach.

Will RG3 become the next Vince Young? ROY to the bench? RG3 has never liked Cousins being on the roster and if he plays well RG3 will be the man on the outside looking in. This should be interesting.

I still think RGIII has a lot of potential. It's just clear he isn't 100%, and that doesn't extend to just running the ball. Until after the bye, he wasn't using his right leg to really pass the ball, he was just throwing it with his upper body. He's now getting hit quite a bit, and it's further shaking his mechanics up.

What the Redskins really need is a young, innovative young head coach who excels on the offensive side of the ball. Find an experienced defensive coordinator who is a previous head coach who can help advise, and go from there.

Adam Schefter weighing in on local radio, essentially saying Snyder knew Shanahan wanted to quit last season.

ESPN analyst Adam Schefter called into the Sports Fix on ESPN 980 on Wednesday, and offered his insight into Sunday’s report that Mike Shanahan cleaned out his office and was prepared to quit last season.

“I’ll just say this. I didn’t know about the office part that Dan Graziano reported over the weekend,” he said. “That was like, ‘Well, I didn’t know that one.’ But I knew how Mike felt about certain things. So that doesn’t surprise me at all. At one point I thought he would do that. But he didn’t and he stayed on. The office part was something I didn’t know about. That kinda caught me.

“I think at one point last year, I don’t know when,” he continued, when asked whether he thought Shanahan considered quitting. “I don’t know if it was January, February or March; yes, I do believe Mike was prepared to quit at one point, yes.”

The analyst spoke about a conversation he had with Shanahan earlier this week, but wasn’t clear whether his opinions came as a result of that conversation. Schefter did seem pretty sure that Snyder was aware he was in danger of losing his coach.

“I think that Dan felt last year — and Dan was aware of this by the way — that Mike was prepared at one point to walk away,” said Schefter. “Dan was aware. That’s not a surprise to him. He 100 percent knew that. How did he know that? I don’t know.”

Schefter admitted that he wasn’t privy to any conversations between the coach and owner, but he remained firm in his statement that Snyder knew Shanahan wasn’t happy.

“I can tell you 100 percent that Dan was aware of this,” said Schefter. “He was. I think his feeling was, Mike was overreacting and that things were gonna work out. Mike should basically continue to work hard and things should work out. Clearly they haven’t.”
The ESPN analyst also spoke about the relationship between Shanahan and Robert Griffin III.

“I think people know how RGIII feels about Mike,” he said. “And again, we can sugarcoat this all we want. We can dry to dress it up and call it ‘lukewarm.’ The bottom line is, he doesn’t like the coach and I don’t think he wants the coach here. Period. And we talked about this, the little triangle of power here in the organization, there are two guys on one side and one on the other. Two guys will win, one guy’s gonna lose. Although in this case, everybody loses.”

I don't think RG3 is 100%, but I also don't think he is hurt enough to warrant benching him for Cousins. To me it is obvious that Shanny is just making a change for change's sake. I don't believe Shanny's explanation of Griffin not being 100%, he is taking too many hits and that he is trying to protect him fo next year. Unless the player is injured you don't bench your franchise QB. A coach in Shanny's position isn't concerned with next season........his only interest is trying to find a spark to show management that he can win with Cousins in hopes of saving his job. Shanny knows how anal Washington media can be, if Cousins plays well (he is playing against some pretty bad defenses) he is going to create controversy (in the locker room and out) heading into next season.
