Like HD-DVD? I just don't see game companies latching on to a proprietary format, but who knows. Everything else MS makes is proprietary.

Nintendo has been doing it for years and they seem to be doing ok.

Remember Gamecube discs? Plus the tiny cartridges they use for their handhelds.

More and more people are doing this with their PC's.

I recently bought the first batman game for like 2 bucks during the christmas steam deal and was playing it on my tv because my gaming computer was sitting close to it at the time. All I really needed to do for that game was to go out and buy the xbox controller for the PC and I would be set.

I don't know how it would work with consoles though. Steam is huge, but EA has already made their own system (Origin), and I wouldn't be surprised if others follow.

EA pretty much said F you to valve and they made their stand with BF3.

Origin is useless but they really worked their EA magic by tying it into some games now I can't even play BF3 without having to open up and log into origin just to hit the stupid play button and it just sits there in the background literally doing nothing.

I don't think so. The GPU that's slated to be in the console (ATi Radeon 6000 Series) currently costs $80. By the time the console comes out, it'll be even cheaper.

No chance they release the next Xbox (whatever it's called) ahead of the PS4 and don't allow used games.
It would destroy the Xbox brand.

Only way they could do that is if both consoles release at the same time and both prohibit used games.

IMO, the online pass thing is their answer to used games. They would never outright ban used games ... unless they were all willing to work together.

I wasn't really angry about the used games because I don't buy used.

Then I realized that means borrowed games from buddies... Now I'm pissed

I half-expected the next gen to be digital purchases only but I guess that would hurt it as far as blu-rays go. In essence that would be the same as only allowing new games to be played on it though.

It's just the principle. I bring some of my used games in to trade on a new one, to save a few bucks. I'm not trying to be a pirate, I'm not trying to steal from anyone.
Frankly, used game prices at Gamestop/EB are stupid anyway. Hell, I see games like Battlefield 3 sell used for only $5 less than the new version.
Being a sports game guy, clearly it's not the same.
But, if you wanna cut out of used games, do what EA and others have done - charge $10 for an online pass.
I understand why they do this crap.
But to completely ban used games is crap ... and, like you said Bomberooski, not being able to lend or borrow games is incredible bullshit.

My old sports games I give to a guy I work with ... he's married with kids and no disposable income for games. So when I'm done with games, I just give them to him. I hope I can still do that.

I really don't see that happening any time soon. At least another ten years.

Not to mention the costs of hard drives has sky rocketed recently so it isn't cost effective to put a monstrous HDD in these consoles, which is what you would need to go to a download only system.

I don't know a whole lot about computers, but it seems like Xbox could of used a lot more powerful video card than the 6670, especially if the system is suppose to launch at the end of next year.

It COULD, but it's about managing power vs. cost. If you want your console to be affordable, you can't jam a $400 Southern Islands GPU in there and sell it for $300.

lol at can't play used games. Sounds like they didn't see this through at all. Yes, I bet the game creators/publishers are getting a hard-on over it. But I bet the average consumer is thinking, "ok, I'll get a playstation".

That's pretty much how I feel about this rumor. If Sony were to do the same thing, I'd probably make a full time switch to PC gaming.

If it is true (which I really don't see happening), I highly doubt that Microsoft would do it without Sony doing it as well. Microsoft would lose too many customers.
