While I don't entirely disagree with the sentiment, I think Bilbo Baggins is pretty popular among the older generation (I was introduced to the Hobbit by my brother who is 10 years older than I).

Either way, the fact remains, I wouldn't call Spider-Man's origin iconic, I would call his character iconic. How he gets to that point is really often bordering on stupid or nonsensical. So if they changed it completely, that's why I wouldn't care. If they do change it though, I definitely agree that it's a sign of caving to something topical. That being said though, that's what 90% of comic books and their movies are about so, whatever.

He could have been created in the 1800's and he still wouldn't have been as iconic to most people today prior to the first part of the Hobbit movie (hence the arguable generation gap).

EDIT -- in fairness, I guess some people could have delved into the Bilbo backstory after the initial trilogy...but the story remains the same: Spider-Man is way more iconic and than Bilbo in the past 30 or so years at least, I'd say.

Exactly, a full 30 years Spiderman has been more popular and iconic that Bilbo Baggins. Warner is what...12 or 13 years older than me? How is there a generational divide between us? It's Warner, not Bucky...

I can't speak for W2B, but my guess is that he's referring to the fact that Spider-Man was constantly popular during our upbringing and Bilbo is only really popular now (if popular would even be the word for it).

Regardless, the overall point is more relevant: Spider-Man is and will forever be more iconic than Bilbo Baggins.

I don't think so. Spider-man is just an action hero now, and since he's been transformed into so many different characters, even within the span of a decade, it's fair that Spider-man doesn't really fit a specific mold outside of "smart orphan with superpowers."

Iron Man, as he's been made by Favreau and Downey, embodies many many more iconic intangibles, IMHO, so I don't think you're off.

However, I'll point this one out: I work at a fitness club that is geared towards families so now that it's summer all the kids are coming in for swim lessons, etc. The two most common "character" swim clothes little kids wear (at least the boys) are Lightning McQueen from Cars and Spider-man. I've never seen a kid come in geared out in Iron Man stuff, excepting maybe two or three with Avengers board shorts or shirts.

Once again..."our upbringing"? Spiderman was more iconic during my childhood than he was during yours. Even during the height of LOTR popularity when it was breaking records, none of the characters could hold a candle to Spiderman among any age group. So I don't see what generational lines have to do with anything...

This goes along with what I was originally saying, it was all up to Tolkein. You wanna know Bilbo Baggins? Read literally a handful of books and you got him, end of story. It's a pretty open and shut case(confined). His character has obviously been handled with care(sacred).


Spiderman has been written and made by so many people with so many adaptations that it might as well be public domain at this point.

Oh look, how many people knew he was now with The Fantastic Four?

Considering the way that Tolkien described the easterlings in the book, I think it's safe to say the Hobbits and all other main characters were white in Tolkien's story.

I will say you have a fair point overall, when I read everything you have to say in general (your stupid picture not withstanding)....I do think that you weren't entirely clear in your initial point, where you made it sound like making Spider-Man gay would not be equal to making Bilbo Baggins black. I think I get what you mean now, but you could be have been clearer out of the gate.

Not only is Spider-man in the new F4, he has been a member of the Avengers for over 20 years. Plus, depending on which Marvel Universe you follow, he is either a black kid or Dr. Octopus in the head of Peter Parker.
