mgo, the average fighter would have lost that fight early on in the 2nd. They either would have given up their neck when trying to get out of the mount, or they would have given up and stopped defending so the ref would stop the fight.

Fedor fought his ass off in trying to survive.

Mainstream means everything, which is why they are doing this GP deal to begin with. To bring SF up a level. Do you think they paraded these guys around New York all week long for the benefit of MMA elitist dorks?

Overeem and Barnett has a shot at creating some real buzz. Overeem could be a breakout star, and Barnett "gets it", is charasmatic, articulate, and a great talker.

Any other final, and Strikeforce is exactly where they were at before this thing started. It may end up that way anyway, but Overeem/Barnett gives hope.

Since they're pretty much "stuck" (for lack of a better word) with Showtime, it's PPV, no? Clearly, Overeem/Barnett would be the best fight to sell on PPV.

I know virtually nothing about MMA but I do not understand how Fedor withstood a beating like that for that long and didn't lose consciousness. It was unreal to me. Is it somewhat typical for a guy to get beaten like that yet stay somewhat in the fight?

Not at all, but Fedor has done that before and come back to win. Maybe not to the extent of that beating, but he's infamous for being nearly impossible to finish.

The biggest stars also get the benefit of the doubt from refs in terms of how soon they stop fights. Kind of like big NBA stars getting calls that scrubs don't or star hitters in baseball getting a tighter stike zone.

I think the ultimate goal was to get Fedor/Overeem in round two, hype the fuck out of it, generate buzz, and then get one of them in the finals vs. Barnett.

The only possible matchup that they can do which won;t equal automatically falling on their face is Overeem/Barnett. Especially if Overeem steamrolls his way to the end, because then Barnett can play heel and sell that fight like a motherfucker. Then the winner won't even matter. Overeem has the potential to be the breakout star Strikeforce thought they were getting with Fedor. Barnett has the potential to be the guy people either love or hate, ala Brock.

You cant even main event a PPV with any other matchup. You'd have to go Cyborg/Gina on top, but headlining a PPV with a womens fight that was one sided the first time is pointless.

King Mo/doesnt matter, maybe Fejao rematch if he gets a win before then
something like Bigfoot/Werdum or Gil/Thompson again or another hardcore fight of your choosing, doesnt matter because its not in a postion to draw

A card like this would be worth the risk of PPV, and could easily do Affliction numbers as a bottom out point, but I think it would crush that and do significantly more than 100k.

I'd want a heavyweight fight to determine the #1 contender if Overeem were to win...something like Werdum vs. Cormier although I realize that's not an attractive fight

You could do another fight in place of the #1 contender fight....perhaps Hendo/Mo like you mentioned (I assume Hendo def. Feijao).

They have options but they need Overeem and Carano for sure.

Yeah, I forgot about Walker, have to sneak him in, but drawing on TV and drawing on PPV are two different animals (Kimbo).

The top three are locks, you could play around with the other two fights and go in many directions. I prefer getting Gil in there somehow, and Mo/Hendo in some form, but trying Walker wouldnt be a bad idea, especially if they can get Batista to fight him which would obviously be a huge draw.

I give Strikeforce a lot of credit, to me, that was easily the best put together show, in terms of production, set up, all that. They even had talking before the fight instead of the lame non-talking hype video, good call. The only odd thing I found was that twice between fights their seemed to be a time where the video was only showing a shot of the arena/cage, while you could hear Mauro and Gus promoting in the back, might've just been the stream I was watching tho.

Solid fucking fights too.. the room was in absolute shock when they said they had called the fight.. but I couldnt say I disagree with the decision, Fedor was beat to the damn pulp. I tried to say that I think this guy cares less and less with each passing day, and I think it was evident last nite, hes not coming as prepared as he once did, and thats saying something when he was probably lax in his preparation to begin with. Im shocked he was dominated the way he was, but I was cheering my ass off for Big Foot, for whatever reason.. just to see the internet nerds go up in a panic I guess, lol. I admire Fedor if he hangs them up too, he realizes if he cant stay on the elite level he holds himself to, then it may not be worth it to fight anymore, and I respect that. Many guys hold on too long.

As far as drawing, of course Coker prefers a Barnett/REEM match.. but at the same time im sure hes shitting his pants that he wont even be able to get Barnett to fight in America. Altho I think Sergei would be a really tough act to draw money from.. if he can KO Barnett the way he did Arlovski and is matched with THE REEM, I think their will be some solid hype. I know a lot of casuals who would buy, but honestly I dont think ANY match up is going to sell a PPV too well for Strikeforce.

Taken from BE and a post-show conference with Dana's favorite pals, the M-1 dudes:

Finkelstein says "god willing" Fedor will fight again. Hinted the fight should've gone to a third round.

- Kogan says the atmosphere in the locker room after the fight was very quiet.

- Vadim does not think it was a "clear cut" loss. He believes we will see Fedor return to MMA.

- Says the health of a fighter is the priority, so stopping it was the right decision. Somewhat contradicts what they said earlier.

- Jerry Millen is here, but not on stage.

- Finkelstein says Fedor is "really upset" because he was ready for this fight. He's had a "wonderful career" and that the stoppage isn't such a clear cut loss that it will dissuade him from competing.

- Scott Coker calls Fedor the best MMA heavyweight ever.

- The decision to retire or not retire is Fedor's, but Finkelstein says he knows Fedor and that he won't retire.
