New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner suffered a massive heart attack, Florida's Bay News 9 reported Tuesday.

Steinbrenner, who celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4, was listed as in extremely critical condition in a Tampa, Fla hospital.

Yankees spokesman Ian Johns told FOX News he had "no information" on the reported attack, though he conceded Steinbrenner was not in "great health" generally.

The famously cantankerous Steinbrenner, known as "The Boss," has been atop the Yankees masthead for seven World Series titles.

Though he frequently quarreled with the teams managers, in recent years he has been a rare presence at the ballpark, with most statements issued through a spokesperson.

They're saying he's dead now, 6:31 am official time of death..

I view Steinbrenner as being similar to Art Modell. Modell took over arguably the top franchise in the NFL at the time (Browns), appointed himself GM, then made the franchise a loser. The difference is that Steinbrenner had money, Modell didn't.

After buying players like Catfish Hunter, Reggie Jackson, Graig Nettles, etc. to win titles in 1977-1978 during the infancy of free agency, Steinbrenner made a once-proud franchise an also-ran. The Yankees became winners when Steinbrenner stepped out of the day-to-day operations in the mid-1990's. From that point on, he's been an exemplary owner. So, to be fair, I give Steinbrenner credit for eventually learning from his mistakes.

I don't think we can say that Steinbrenner was either "good" or "bad" for baseball, because he was never for "baseball"...he was for "Steinbrenner".

The only major impacts I can think of which Steinbrenner has had off the field is that he's successfully fought revenue-sharing, which has made MLB basically unwatchable in several cities, he's successfully fought collective TV deals, which for a long time made MLB the 3rd most popular sport behind NFL and NBA, and he's successfully fought a common international player draft, which has allowed the Yankees to corner the market on international prospects.

I think Steinbrenner was the furthest thing from a "visionary" or a "revolutionary"...he did everything within his power to keep the MLB at status quo. Was that good for baseball or bad for baseball? Its your opinion.

In the 8-years after the purchase (1973), they were 2-1 in World Series' and lost one ALCS.

Certainly the team had trouble in the 80s, but goddamned did they come back in the mid 90s and beyond.

While he did use New Jersey to threaten the local governments, he eventually did come through and build the new place in the Bronx.

What you say is correct. Perhaps I was overstating things. But I do think that the Yankees were still the premier MLB franchise by a large margin when Steinbrenner took over in 1973. And I think the reason he won the World Series so soon was that his ownership coincided with the advent of free agency. Most owners were unwilling to sign free agents, so it was easy for Steinbrenner to pluck a Hunter, a Jackson, a Sparky Lyle, a Goose Gossage, etc. off of someone's roster. Had Steinbrenner become an owner before free agency, or had he become an owner after free agency signings were a common occurence, I don't think he would have been successful. Just speculation on my part.

and I'm pretty sure there were some in the organization who were against bringing up Jeter in 1995 (or maybe it was some who wanted to trade him).

Can't recall where George was in that situation at the time.

Definitely. Supposedly, Stick was the large force in convincing George that they could build from within in New York and be able to win.
