There are two main ways: hitting the high post or short corner. Since it is a two man front defense, you would play a 3 guard offense. Also, you want to have a high low action from your big men.

If you hit the high post, the player immediately needs to square up and get strong (elbows out) and the first read is the open jumper. The second read is the post player on the block. He needs to seal the post defender and the high post player should give a lob pass to the block. Third look is the three to the wing. You want your wings to find a spot to shoot a three. The defense will collapse to the high post leaving the wings open.

The other option is hitting the short corner. If the ball goes to the wing, you want the low post player to take a step off the block and into the corner. He should be open 90% of the time. When he recieves it, this forces the lower part of the 2-3 to play the ball. The goal is to get the high post player to cut straight down the lane ball side and seal the center. He will have a 1 on 1 opportunity to do a post move.

You have one player just absolutely killing your team, what is the best way to neutralize this player?

 

This is preference based really. You could go with a man to man with players over helping or a box and one.

With the man to man, you would have it set up where when the player has the ball. All the off ball defenders will sag off their man to close off the driving lanes. This will force the player to pass the ball to his teammates or shoot a contested jumper.

With the box and one, you would play 4 guys in a simple box zone defense with the 5th player face guarding the other teams players and playing a hard man to man defense. This creates a constant double team on the star player and is an unconventional defense that can disrupt an offense.

When should you run a zone defense, when should you run a man-to-man defense.

 

It really depends on the other teams offense. If they are strong outside shooting, you play man. If they have good bigs, you play zone.

Also, the type of offense they run will affect your defense. If the offense is using a lot of picks and screens I would run a zone. If they are using motion and cuts to score then a man to man would work.

Those are the exact answers I was lookin for, too bad buckeyes is just going to claim he would have answered the same way.

To correct a mistake you made in the last one though, it's not just if the other team has bigs. A zone is also very effective at stopping penetration, so if you have a team with a lot of slashing type guards, you would want to run more of a zone defense against them.

Really a zone defense should only be employed when the other team struggles shooting the ball. If the other team has bigs and a shooter, i'd still go man and play the sag defense that you were talking about.
