SUPERMAN:THE MAN OF STEEL (2012)

Haven't watched an entire Superman movie yet and don't plan on staring here, looks dumb.

If I want see watch the Justice League I'd just watch this..

That's because you're a child

Saw it yesterday. As a whole, I thought it was pretty good, but it just didn't do anything for me personally. I did enjoy the performances by Cavill and Adams. Didn't really enjoy Zod. No character behind him. He just wasn't a villain I cared to know more about. I don't know, I guess the Superman is just too powerful for me to really think that he's in trouble, which kind of makes it boring to me. Not a bad movie at all, just wasn't really for me.

I thought this movie was pretty damn good. Fuck a story when it comes to comic book movies, idgaf. I want to see some bad ass shit go down.

All in all. Pretty good.

For what it was...it was good. It was a fine summer blockbuster, that I enjoyed. I'd say...a fair 6 or 7 out of 10...much like Iron Man 3...I just feel like there is a much better story to tell within the framework of the story they gave us.

Now, for some real nerd talk.

As I've said before though...the film is hindered from jump street by the Superman character. Superman, as what is represented to the masses, and what the masses want to see, is fucking boring. I'm sorry, but its true. He's a fucking Alien that is indestructible. Cool story, bro. Unfortunately, I've seen the story before. He's just not an interesting character when you are putting him in a film where its expected that he just destroys shit. I mean, I get it...that is what people want...I just feel there is a much better story to tell about Superman.

In Man of Steel...the best part of the film was the first 30 minutes. It was like they took the first 30 minutes and fast forwarded through 9 seasons of Smallville. Unfortunately, TO ME, that is where the most interesting aspect of Superman is...how Kal-El becomes Clark Kent. The best scenes were when he's a fucking vagabond with a full beard, going around, from place to place and getting glimpses of his childhood and putting the pieces together of who Kal-El IS and what it means to be Clark Kent and ultimately, what it means to be Superman. In my opinion, that should have been the entire damn movie. He shouldn't have donned the Red and Blue with the cape until the end of the film. That should have been the 'go home' to the whole story. He should have defeated Zod, with the full troglodyte beard. The character of Kal-El / Clark Kent, battling with these lessons Papa Kent taught him and what Jor-El tells him is where the nuts of the story is for this film, IMO. If they ever make that movie...they can take all of my money...it'd be great...unfortunately, I doubt they ever will.

Sadly, for Henry Cavill...he did a fine enough job...his best parts though, where before he put the cape on. Once he put the suit on, he turned into a bit of a smug dick...there was no transformation...he was a very interesting character one second...puts on the suit...completely new, wooden character.

Russell Crowe was quite good in it. I thought the first 10m or so of the film where he was the lead was actually fucking fantastic. It was very well written, too. Kevin Costner, too...man, I really thought he needed more screen time.

In summary...this movie is going to make a LOT of money. There will be a sequel. There is a lot of time for Superman to make things go BOOM. I would have liked to see a better origin story...a little more subtle on the blockbuster end...but, as is, it was a fine movie.

As for Zack Snyder...he "gets" the comic book to movie medium...he keeps it close enough to the source material and he gives you a movie that just works. My only issue is with the writing, oddly...I think Nolan and Goyer were capable of a much better story here.

I went to see it today. Six bucks, what the hell, right. Pretty dull IMO. Plot was all over the place, didn't really understand the logic behind some of that Kryptonian science.

Anyways the visuals are obviously the selling point of the film, but honestly all of the action seemed endless and got to be pretty tedious. But I am looking forward seeing Batman make this bitch bleed in the next one.

Plot holes:
Jonathan Kent driving into a tornado and willingly offing himself, when Clark could have easily saved him. Really stupid.
Metropolis was fucking destroyed. KO'd. Knocked out. Crazy to me that at the end they jumped forward to it being rebuilt.

Hate to say it but I agree. This movie was just, meh. However Superman putting an ass whooping on Zod and his Deciples were awesome action sequences, worthy of the price of admission alone. The Krypton scene at the beginning was pretty amazing as well.

I think Zod could have been better cast. Crowe did such a great job conveying confidence, strength and wisdom that it made Zod look like a cry baby bitch. I think Zod should have came off more Evil then Crazy. Nolan did such a great job with his Villans I think we all expected more in the acting categorey.

I was really surprised they made this movie so "extraterrestrial..." Call me crazy but they turned Superman into a Sci Fi action thriller. They had off earth action scenes and spaceships flying around like it was Star Trek! Even fucking Superman had a spaceship. I think Zod fucked up The earth more then Kahn did in Abrams Into Darkness.

I have no idea how they can pull off a Lex Luthor now, especially since Supes is a bad ass cracking skulls and taking names. He basically told Uncle Sam go fuck yourself at the end! Which don't get me wrong that's actually pretty damn cool. That's exactly how Superman would be in real life. He's not the Boy Scout we've come to know in the other movies.

I'd be excited to see a more darker/sinister Lex Luthor come into the fold and kill off Lois. Add some Kryptonite and a B villan like Metallo, I think a sequel could work.

Totally agree Snyder gets superhero flicks! I think the directing was fine, the pacing of the story was the problem.

I really liked the whole Clark finding himself/Smallville flashbacks, but I think that all came off the rails when Lois showed up and everyone found a spaceship.

Superman: Flying to a church near you

By Eric Marrapodi, Co-Editor CNN Belief Blog

Baltimore, Maryland (CNN) - As the new Superman movie takes flight this weekend, filmmakers are hoping the Man of Steel lands not only in theaters, but also in pulpits.

Warner Bros. Studios is aggressively marketing "Man of Steel" to Christian pastors, inviting them to early screenings, creating Father’s Day discussion guides and producing special film trailers that focus on the faith-friendly angles of the movie.

The movie studio even asked a theologian to provide sermon notes for pastors who want to preach about Superman on Sunday. Titled “Jesus: The Original Superhero,” the notes run nine pages.

“How might the story of Superman awaken our passion for the greatest hero who ever lived and died and rose again?” the sermon notes ask.

(Disclaimer: CNN, like Warner Bros., is owned by Time Warner.)

Similar campaigns to corral the country's large number of Christians into the movie theater have been used for "Les Miserables," "Soul Surfer" and "The Blind Side," all of which had at least some faith angle.

Baltimore pastor Quentin Scott is among dozens of ministers who received an e-mail invitation from Grace Hill Media, a Hollywood-based Christian marketing firm, to an early screening of “Man of Steel.”

“There was an actual push to say `We’re putting out something that speaks to your group,' ” said Scott, one of the pastors of Shiloh Christian Community Church in Baltimore.

At first, Scott said, he didn’t buy the religious pitch. Then he decided to attend a free midweek screening in Baltimore.

“When I sat and listened to the movie I actually saw it was the story of Christ, and the love of God was weaved into the story," said the pastor.

"It was something I was very excited about that with the consultation of our senior pastor, we could use in our congregation.”

Grace Hill’s sermon notes are specially designed for churches like Shiloh that integrate multimedia into their services.

“Let’s take a look at the trailer for `Man of Steel,’” the notes suggest after briefly introducing the movie’s history and themes.

The man behind the notes, Pepperdine University professor Craig Detweiler, has prepared similar material for films like 2009’s "The Blind Side" and "The Book of Eli" from 2010.

The spiritual themes in “Man of Steel” are abundant, Detweiler said, and his notes enable Christians to thoughtfully engage with pop culture instead of shunning it.

“All too often, religious communities have been defined by what they're against. With a movie like `Man of Steel,’ this is a chance to celebrate a movie that affirms faith, sacrifice and service,” Detweiler said.

It will be hard for even casual Christians to miss the messianic metaphors in "Man of Steel.”

The movie focuses on the origins of Superman, who was sent from the planet Krypton as an infant to save his species.

He is raised by surrogate parents who help him grapple with his special powers, even though they don’t fully understand the source of his extraordinary abilities.

When he turns 33, Superman must willingly sacrifice himself to save the human race.

Sound familiar?

If that’s not enough, as a boy Clark Kent is shown wrestling with his superpowers, and asks his earthly dad, Jonathan Kent, “Did God do this to me?”

“Somewhere out there you have another father and he sent you here for a reason,” says Jonathan Kent.

Even the visuals hammer home the messianic motifs.

During a fight with his archenemy, General Zod, Superman plunges down to Earth, his arms outstretched as if he were being crucified. Of course, he rises again.

Detweiler writes in the sermon notes, “What Jesus and Superman both give us, through their `hero’ actions but also their `human’ actions – is hope.”

“I think it’s a very good thing that Hollywood is paying attention to the Christian marketplace,” said Ted Baehr, who runs Movieguide, a website that reviews family friendly films from a Christian perspective.

“Where it gets sticky is when they try to manipulate the market and when Christians try to manipulate Hollywood. But here I think we have the right balance.”

But other Christians are heaving a supersized sigh at the movie marketing.

"Any pastor who thinks using `Man of Steel Ministry Resources' is a good Sunday morning strategy must have no concept of how high the stakes are, or very little confidence in the power of God’s word and God’s spirit," writes P.J. Wenzel, a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Dublin Baptist Church in Ohio.

"As they entertain their congregants with material pumped out from Hollywood’s sewers, lives are kept in bondage, and people’s souls are neglected," according to Wenzel, who said he was e-mailed information about the movie.

Scott, the Baltimore pastor, said he knows that Warner Bros. Studios has a financial incentive in pushing the film to pastors.

But he said that’s fine with him. “They’re using us but in fact we’re using them,” he said.

His church won't show clips from the movie this weekend because it had already planned out its service. But he plans to use them later, during meetings with the church’s men’s group.

“If you give me another opportunity to talk to someone about Jesus Christ, and I can do that because of your movie, that’s a win for me, because it is about spreading the Gospel.”

I was worried about this when I saw the run time. That last Superman movie was incredibly dull. I don't blame the actors, it was just a really dull script. Getting the impression this one suffers from the same thing. Loved the 1978 Superman and was ok with both Superman 2's, but it has been incredibly downhill since.

Dave, shut the fuck up.

Just saw it. It was a good for a superman movie. I've never been much of a superman fan, the character just isnt that interesting (as many others have said in this thread)

I doubt they want to go toe to toe with The Avengers 2.

A Supes sequel might not stand a chance vs The Avengers 2, but a Batman vs Superman or Justice League movie could!

It's kind of ironc, but Batman and Supes are a lot more darker and adult than the "cartoonish" marvel characters now a days. I think the vast majority of people would pay to see darker Batman vs Superman movie then some gimmicky Avengers 2.
