This thread makes me want to gouge my fucking eyes out. Someone can't say right now that they'd rather have Carmelo? You're kidding me. I'm not saying that Carmelo is better (or worse), but Carmelo is one of the most complete offensive players in the game. Hell, it was just last off-season (or the one before that) that analysts were saying Carmelo was the most complete offensive player in the NBA. Durant can put up 40 on any given night? Well so can Melo. Durant could average 28 points a game for the season. Well Melo already has.
There's not much that Kevin Durant can do that Carmelo can do. There's not much that Carmelo can do that Durant can't. The two are nearly identical.
Let's not forget that Melo led the Nuggets to 3 playoff berths That includes his rookie season, taking a team from like 17 wins to the playoffs, first team to ever do that I might add. That's with his second and third leading scorers being Andre Miller and Voshon Lenard... I'll say it again... Voshon Lenard. That's all before Iverson. Can Durant do that? Has Durant done that?
And when we look at offensive stats, let's not forget who Carmelo had to play with last season. Chauncey Billups changed the whole scheme of the Nuggets offense. Besides Billups, you have Kleiza, Smith, Martin, and Nene who all get their shots in. The other offensive players around Carmelo are better which means he doesn't have to put the offense on his back every night (like he used to and like Durant does now).
Sure, Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook may score 16 and 15 points a night, but on other teams, like the Nuggets for example, you'd see about 10 and 8 from them. They are scoring more on the Thunder because there's no one else who can do it. Look at Westbrook, he shot horrible for Christ's sake. On any other team (at least an average one) he wouldn't have taken half the shots he took. You can't put Green and Westbrook's production up there with Chauncey and Nene's (the two and three scorers for the Nuggets).
If I was starting a team right now, maybe I would take Durant, maybe I wouldn't, but there's no way it's a no-brainer. All Durant is doing right now is what Carmelo did when he first got into the league (minus half of what Carmelo did which was take a shitty team to the playoffs for three straight seasons without another legitimate scorer by his side). Can the Nuggets give Carmelo the ball right now and say, "we want 30 each and every night, don't worry, we're not expecting you to win more than 23 games" and he goes out there and does it? Yes he could. He's just at the stage in his career right now where he's learning he can contribute to his team being successful in so many more ways than stats.
I'm not saying Durant is bad, he's far from it, but he's not the God of basketball all of a sudden and he's not far better (if he's even better is a question in itself which I think I'm convinced he's not) than Melo. There's more to the game than stats.
Side Note: I'm not a Nuggets fan. I'm not a Carmelo fan. You can ask nbafan, we've had enough debates about the Nuggets before.
