The knock on Mays is his cover skills because he is rarely manned up on a WR because USC allows him to play 20 yards off the LOS and just rove. That's his job and he is good at it. USC has always had the SS play closer to the LOS and therefore the SS usually puts up better numbers than the FS (Bing, Ellison, etc.). Their assignments are completely different, comparing their numbers to each other is asinine.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if he plays FS in the league. I think he'll be an SS or OLB even. But I don't care about that because I enjoy watching him play now because he looks silly out there. It's funny watching the USC defense live because you see Mays 20 yards behind everyone else and he is just this huge freak. Can't help but wonder why the hell the most athletic guy on the team is so far away from all the action but that's what the FS position has done at USC since Carroll took over.

Yeah I can find the article if you want but basically the strength and conditioning coach at SC said Mays is such a freak that he could easily put on 20 pounds and bulk up to 260 and play DEnd if he wanted to.

Word on the street is that he is tight in the hips and is working on increasing his flexibility and cover skills. Apparently he has been beasting throughout Spring Ball and everyone has been in awe of him. From all the stuff I've read he's been making plays every day and laying people out at will.

That said, this thread was made for fun. I like Mays, but I'm not stupid enough to think he is better than Eric Berry. Berry is a much smoother defensive back and a better free safety all around because of his ability to man up and cover receivers as well as ball hawk.

Mays is a ferocious hitter and an intimidator but he has weaknesses that he can improve on and that is why he came back for his senior season. He knows what his weaknesses are and plans on fixing them.

Everyone wants to hate on Mays but the fact of the matter is that everyone would love to have him on their team. If the Raiders can't get him next year I'm hoping he falls to Pittsburgh because I know they will use him right. Imagine Mays and Troy P in the secondary together. That should be illegal.

You live in Florida. You've probably seen him play less than 5 full games.

Not only that, but I'm not the only one "overhyping" him. Every NFL analyst and scout has Mays as one of the top safeties in football.

And I'd love to him have on Oakland. If he is used correctly he could be great. He has an insane amount of potential because his football skills can be improved.

Taylor Mays is not only physically the most intimidating football player on the planet, but he is also one of the most fearsome human beings on the planet.

Last year the USC football team threw a party for Mays. He ate the entire cake before they could tell him there was a stripper in it.

I interviewed Acie Earl about a year and a half ago for my radio show. Cool guy. Never panned out in the NBA but he was fun to talk to. He is from the area I grew up in and is somewhat of a local "celeb" in a way. Played his HS ball at Moline HS and then college ball at Iowa.

I took a class over the summer once as well and his dad was the teacher for it as well. Long winded story teller but really interesting guy.

Its even funnier when you consider that even USC fans admit that Mays has no responsibility whatsoever on defense...all he has to do is 'rove'. So you have some rover guy who has no sacks, no INTs, relatively few tackles, yet will someday be the best safety in NFL history?

USC had the number 1 ranked pass defense in the country last season and only gave up 7 pass TDs through the air last season. And that is playing in the pass happy Pac-10 where QBs throw 40-50 times a game.

USC had one defensive back drafted last year, Cary Harris, who was drafted in the 6th round. Mays is the leader and best player on the best secondary in the nation.

He does need to improve his ball hawking skills. He goes for the kill rather than the pick almost every time and needs to figure out when to do each. Like I've been saying, there is a lot of room for him to improve in pass coverage. But when he does up that area of his game he is going to be an all around great player.
