With no NHL, this team is suppose to be just as big as the 2005 team, though maybe not as star loaded as that team was. It is going to be hard to crack the top 6 on this team, and basically the team is fairly well set.
Goalies
Jordan Binnington Owen Sound (OHL)
Laurent Brossoit Edmonton (WHL)
Jake Paterson Saginaw (OHL)
Malcolm Subban Belleville (OHL)
Who will make the team? Subban is expectd to be the starter going into the tournament, but the talent in net for Canada is huge this year, and it isn't like years before where you tossed a goalie in net and hope the forwards scored enough. All four are capable of taking wins. Expect to see Jake Paterson get cut out of this group.
Defense
Frank Corrado Sudbury (OHL)
Mathew Dumba Red Deer (WHL)
Dougie Hamilton* Niagara (OHL)
Scott Harrington* London (OHL)
Ryan Murphy Kitchener (OHL)
Xavier Ouellet B-Boisbriand (QMJHL)
Adam Pelech Erie (OHL)
Derrick Pouliot Portland (WHL)
Griffin Reinhart Edmonton (WHL)
Morgan Rielly Moose Jaw (WHL)
Ryan Sproul Sault Ste. Marie (OHL)
Tyler Wotherspoon Portland (WHL)
Who will make the team? The injury to second overall pick Ryan Murray leaves a spot on the Canadian blueline, but even then, the field is so deep, someone good is getting left off it. Dougie Hamilton is a lock for the first pairing, and Scott Harrington is a second pairing shutdown defense who will return as well. Perhaps teamed with Matt Dumba who should easily make the team, as should Ryan Murphy. From there it is a crap shoot on who is left for the remaining 3 spots. Griffin Reinhart and Morgan Rielly could make it, or just one of them, while Derrick Poliot might get on as well to round out the defense.
Forwards
Francis Beauvillier Rimouski (QMJHL)
Anthony Camara Barrie (OHL)
Daniel Catenacci Owen Sound (OHL)
Phillip Danault Victoriaville (QMJHL)
Jonathan Drouin Halifax (QMJHL)
Tyler Graovac Ottawa (OHL)
Jonathan Huberdeau* Saint John (QMJHL)
Charles Hudon 24/06/94 Chicoutimi (QMJHL)
Boone Jenner* 15/06/93Oshawa (OHL)
J.C. Lipon Kamloops (WHL)
Nathan MacKinnon Halifax (QMJHL)
Mark McNeill Prince Albert (WHL)
Sean Monahan Ottawa (OHL)
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins Oklahoma City (AHL)
Ty Rattie Portland (WHL)
Brett Ritchie Lincoln (OHL)
Mark Scheifele* Barrie (OHL)
Hunter Shinkaruk Medicine Hat (WHL)
Colton Sissons Kelowna (WHL)
Ryan Strome* Niagara (OHL)
Tom Wilson Plymouth (OHL)
Who will make the team? How is this for a first line. Scheifele on left, Ngent-Hopkins in the middle, and Huberdeau on the right. And that still leaves you Ryan Strome and Boone Jenner on the second line, leaving one top 6 spot open. So it isn't about the top six, but rather the bottom six. Nathan MacKinnon, this years projected number one will probably be a 4th line centre, which just shows the talent the team has. Most likely his linemate in Halifax Jonathan Drouin will join him as well, as the two are ripping up the 'Q'. So that leaves 3-4 spots left. Phillip Danault is probably a safe pick, as would Hunter Shinkaruk. Ty Rattie probably as well, and perhaps Monahan. I can't see Ritchie making the team on any line. No matter what happens, the top 6 from Canada is going to be loaded with firepower, and if you add in the 4th MacKinnon/Drouin line as a possible scoring line as well, which they can easily do, Canada should be scoring a boat load of goalies, while also having the defense and goalies to stop them.
