Lauren Frayer said:(Sept. 18) – A Texas high school's star quarterback died after collapsing on the field Friday night.
Reggie Garrett was a senior and straight-A student at West Orange Stark High School in eastern Texas. His family said he had a history of seizures.
Garrett jogged to the sidelines after throwing his second touchdown pass with nine minutes left in the game's second quarter. The team's medic rushed to him as he collapsed, and he was loaded into an ambulance as the game continued. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital around 9:30 p.m. local time. An autopsy is planned.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound quarterback appeared to have suffered a seizure, his coach Dan Hooks told The Beaumont Enterprise. Hooks said Garrett's mother told him that her son had also experienced another seizure "maybe three years ago."
Assistant Coach Cornel Thompson said Garrett trotted to the sidelines, where his teammates noticed that something was wrong. "Kids tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Coach, Reggie,'" Thompson told the same paper. "I turned around and seen him on his knees and then moved him on his side. They thought he was having a seizure."
Garrett's team went on to win the game 27-to-6, against another school from Jasper, Texas. After the game, players, coaches and parents gathered at the 50-yard line to kneel down and absorb the news of Garrett's death, local TV station KBMT reported.
Later many of them visited the Baptist Orange Hospital where Garrett's body lay. "Most of the community was here at the hospital," hospital spokeswoman Susan Courtney told CNN. "There was hundreds of people in the parking lot, there was people in the waiting room, cheerleaders, drill team, band members, community support by the hundreds."
