Ever wished you could play Android games on your big screen? Neither have we, but Envision is giving consumers an opportunity to do just that with their new Android-powered game console, the EVO 2.

The console is powered by a Samsung 1.2 GHz processor, an unspecific NVIDIA GPU, and runs on a modified version of Android 2.2. Packed with the console you will find an EVO TV remote, EVO game controller and an HDMI cable, for good measure. If that wasn't enough to whet your appetite, motion control will be added at the end of this year.

Additional features revolve around the social aspect of gaming, allowing users to earn points to purchase Android games with EVO tokens and the privilege of using Envision's new Qquip SMS blogging reward service.

The SDK for the EVO 2 is available now for free, although developers will be subject to an annual $149 fee per unit. If you're quick enough, the first 1,000 developers will get the fees waived. Those who have pre-existing android apps will be happy to know that you can submit them for our gaming pleasure. Since what developers are currently involved, however, it is difficult to ascertain what titles will be like.

To further prove that they are all about what the community wants, Envisions will let you vote on where the system will launch and the general design of the console and its packaging.

The EVO 2 will be released state-side this fall for $249. If you just can't wait, you can place your pre-order at Envisions' online store.

Boo. Who gives a fuck? I guess I'm in the minority but I absolutely can't stand playing games on my phone. I love my Droid but I have zero interest on playing games on something without actual buttons.

I even downloaded Dead Space to my iPod Touch. I fucking love Dead Space and couldn't care less about that "game".

Your not alone.
There terrible games made for terrible platforms.

Android 3.1 enables USB host which will allow a 360or ps3 controller to be plugged into a tablet....I still have ZERO interest in playing games other than maybe tecmo bowl , punchout or some other nostalgic ROM.

The worst part will be the number of hipster shitcocks who think playing angry birds on an ipad make them both tech savvy and a gamer will only multiply.

Dude Im kicking ass in plants vs zombies !!!

Exactly why I hate Apple and their fanboy legion. They are mostly a bunch of hipster douches that I want to punch in the face.

I love my podcasts but people like Chris Grant and CheapyD piss me the fuck off because they are both Apple fanboys. Cheapy more so. And Chris Grant (from Joystiq) doesn't understand that people like us think gaming on phones is dumb. He argues all the time how it's "the future" and how it is "real gaming". Go fuck yourself.

On a side note, doesn't Apple TV do the same thing? Doesn't it enable you to download apps and games to play on your tv?

Neither do I. I have an iPad and no game will ever touch that. Its for business/church use for me and those "games" aren't really games at all in my mind.

It is appeal to the masses time in gaming, probably soon to be called a dark age. Its shovelware at its finest.

I play games on my Ipad, some of that shit is good. Not a fan of the on screen dpad games but a few of those are even good. NBA Jam on the Ipad might be my fav portable game ever, and I hated it on my ipod.

That said, this seems like a retarded ass idea.

I think you are misrepresenting what Chris Grant says. I believe it's the future, only because the sheer install base will continue to generate money. To pretend otherwise is naive, though I wish it wasn't the case. The risk vs reward for an iPhone game is far below that for a big budget console release. Second, that relates primarily to handheld devices. In listening to CG, his point typically revolves around 'why would I carry around an iPhone 4 and a 3DS, when I can get reasonably good games on my iPhone for 1/10th of the price?' And I can understand that. Sure, you won't get the depth of Pokemon or the ease of buttons, but perhaps it's something like the Xperia play that bridges that gap...

i play words with friends on my phone.....thats about it. i played the hell out of game dev story tho. i will play if i am sitting at a table waiting for my food to come....

And yes, for the handheld market, the phone and the iPad/Xoom is extremely viable and in play as far as a market goes.

However, from my understanding, this is a console that plays games that are designed for portable devices (Android phones and the Xoom) and nothing else. That bothers me.

Also, the risk and reward is only as good as your development team. If a team tries to rush a game out, they will more often than not fail. The key is taking your time, working out the bugs and just polishing the game in general. Rockstar Games and Bioware are proof positive of that. They don't have nearly the quantity of releases that a group like Square Enix have, but they certainly have the quality to rival them and I think exceed most game developers in that area.

I think that's only true to an extent. Look, my favorite developer is Valve, and I have been waiting 5 years for more Half Life, and will gladly wait more as they ensure it's the most wicked awesome game of all time.

The risk/reward IMO, increases the longer you're game takes. You are investing more resources, taking more time, tying up more people than if you are just churning a game out. If one of those flops, it can be a serious hit. Rockstar, BioWare, Blizzard, etc have reached a point where they can absorb one of those and roll with the punches (and even their crap, i.e. Manhunt, will still sell well because of the name on the box).

It's the mid-level guys who have the most to lose. If that labour of love you have been crafting flops, all of a sudden you are out of money and out of credibility. I'd use an example like Split/Second. Black Rock created a great game, took their time with it, and it didn't sell. At the end of the day, that's all that matters. You can have a great development team, and things outside of your control will force the closure of your studio.

So while we will never lose the Biggest studios, as crap like Zynga gains steam and PopCap churns out money (I love PopCap games though), more and more studios will devote time and money to iPhone/Android that would have been devoted to full on games in the past. EA spending on Facebook is an example of that IMO

EDIT - I also think the idea of a dev team rushing a game is a misnomer. 9 times out of 10, it's the publisher who will be pushing for that game. If you are a smaller studio who is relying on their money to keep afloat, you don't exactly have a lot of say in that decision. Next thing you know, your rushed game flops (as I am sure you could predict), and the studio is closed

Damn, Twigg! I've got an iPhone, but I'm not a 'hipster douche'. I mean, I guess I can be a douche at times, but I'm definitely no 'hipster'. Just wanted to clarify.

If you don't think gaming on the phones is a big part of the future for video games you are an idiot. Here's just a sample of where we are now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvkW-eZISWg&feature=relmfu

All depends on your interpretation of the future.

Will the leading technology, the most advanced games with all the blah blah blah bells and whistles be on the phone before consoles? No.

Will new things never done before on phones start to arrive, with games that are considered to be "nice" graphically compared to today's standards? Sure.

It's a growing market with plenty of money to be made and ground to break, but phone gaming isn't going to surpass PC/console gaming as the "leader" in gaming advancements and technology.

Pete, I don't think that anyone said that phone games won't be a "big part" of the gaming future...I think most people just said that they dislike phone games for the most part. Big difference.

There is a few out there that I'm sure everyone would like.

Oh I'm certain. Just pointing out the large difference between not liking them and thinking that they won't be a part of the future of gaming. I don't like Nintendo franchises at all anymore, but that doesn't mean they won't be a big part of the future of gaming. Similar situation.

You need storage space ..CPU/gpu power...and good input devices to push the envelope and make compelling games for "gamers". Taking resources away from AAA title development to make dumbed down variations or rehashes of old games isn't going to be a good for anyone.

However, one thing I do see happening is this console Gen lasting too long and allowing mobile hardware to catch up or surpass current power of the consoles. If that happens It's going to be difficult to sell a standalone console when they already have an ios or android powered phone or tablet that easily hooks up to a tv and syncs to a controller.
