I think you are misrepresenting what Chris Grant says. I believe it's the future, only because the sheer install base will continue to generate money. To pretend otherwise is naive, though I wish it wasn't the case. The risk vs reward for an iPhone game is far below that for a big budget console release. Second, that relates primarily to handheld devices. In listening to CG, his point typically revolves around 'why would I carry around an iPhone 4 and a 3DS, when I can get reasonably good games on my iPhone for 1/10th of the price?' And I can understand that. Sure, you won't get the depth of Pokemon or the ease of buttons, but perhaps it's something like the Xperia play that bridges that gap...

I personally disagree. I haven't seen a single game on the iPhone, Android, iPad, etc that I would consider remotely great. At the very most they are time wasters but that's it. I wouldn't recommend a single one to anybody, unlike "real" console games that I come on here and recommened to people all the time.
And hid whole "Why would I carry an iPhone and DS when I can get great games on my iPhone" is bullshit. The games that are created for the DS/PSP are actual GAMES that are designed for those systems. The "games" on iPhone, for the most part, are just stupid time wasters designed to somehow use lame ass touch controls.

I don't think everyone that owns an iPhone is a hipster douche. Hipster douches know who they are. Well, actually they probably don't. They are so hip that they can't even imagine what a douche they actually are.


And of course I know gaming on phones is a big part of the future, but that doesn't mean I think it's a good part of the future. Like KOF said, I think it will deteriorate and erode gaming as a whole. Also like he said, very similar to how motion controls are destroying this generation.

I cant see myself ever carrying a stand alone portable console now. Portable gaming is always about wasting time for me, and having everything from time wasting touch games like Fruit Ninja to full blown RPGs like FFIII (at a fraction of the cost of the DS version) to sports sims (iOOTP11) Im not sure what else I could want.

Theres no way in hell Id pay $30+ for a portable game anymore. Especially when Ill only play it when waiting in line or travelling or something. Ill never sit on my couch and play a portable over a console.

Edit: One thing thats amusing is the $6 version of NBA Jam on Ipad got roster updates but the $40 console version did not. :facepalm:

Agreed on all points...and as to the last one, that is infuriating. So glad I borrowed NBA Jam for the 360 and didn't buy it.

That was the biggest bunch of bullshit I've seen in a long time. I even sent a message to those EA dickheads that had tweeted about that .99 cent sale a while back. I asked them why there was a roster update for a .99 cent game yet there wasn't a single one for a retial game. Of course I never received a response.

And in the five years before Nintendo released Mario, Richard Garriot released 4 Ultima games. Ultima 4 is regarding as one of the best and most powerful RPG's ever designed (in context). So while consoles may have been first, PC's came with the quality and depth that would be lacking on consoles for a long time

Unfortunately, you missed out on the best era of gaming. Games are much more about being flashy than depth of content in a lot of ways. Some of the best games Ive ever played were text based.

That said, PC gaming is dead to me. I have no desire to spend $500 on a video card to see a game the way it was meant to be played. Not to mention all the other annoying things about PC gaming like driver/hardware incompatibilities and that garbage. IMO the pain in the ass that PC gaming is makes the modding abilities a wash. I just want to put the game in, and start playing. The game is ALWAYS optimized for the system you are playing on if you are on a console. PC gamers dont have that luxury.

The only thing I could really say against that is that the annoying things such as driver/hardware compatibilities is a wash due to most companies going the unified driver route. Companies such as nvidia, ati and even shitty creative are now coming out with sets of drivers made for all cards which is nice. No more having to figure out which exact driver you need. Windows for the most part also takes care of most of your driver issues, although i'm not a big fan of most of them. Guess its the old pc gamer in me.

To flip it I stopped playing sports games on PC many years ago because I just wanted to put the game in and play and consoles enabled me to do that. I do miss the PC community for madden though. We were always an older crowd and were smug bastards about online gaming because we had done it for so long. The PC madden room at MM put the other madden rooms to shame just due to the level of depth those guys went into the games every year. Hell I still laugh at the leagues put on here. They look like peanuts compared to some of the shit we did.

How is it irrelevant? You were implying that gaming originated on the PC and that console gaming has been deteriorating the industry, as mobile gaming is now.

Maybe not, but I would not be a fan of finally getting my hands on a game Ive been waiting for only to be forced to immediately turning the detail level/resolution down for it to be playable. I want everything to just work and be optimized for the machine Im playing it on right out of the box. Thats why Im a console gamer now.

That isn't so much the case anymore. Most PC games detect your system and will adjust the settings accoringly. This dumbing down process actually bugs a lot PC gamers myself included mainly because I don't mind playing with the settings. It comes with the territory if you want superior graphics.

I've been running an 8800GTS 320MB card for going on 4 and a half years now and I honestly have no problems playing newer games at the same or better quality then consoles. The only game I can really say that has pissed me off to no end was GTA4, but it was a console port with little to no PC options.
