The iPad is far and away best, but you will have trouble finding an iPad 2 right now. The first gen ones are still around, I have one and love it but it is older now so it's not as cutting edge...it is cheaper though. Most of the other tablets are not even worth considering at this point.

What about the Xoom? I've read/heard good things about it. And some people despise Apple and it's products, myself included.
 
Yes all the reviews point to the Ipad as superior. If you getting one for the wife then go Ipad. The zoom is pretty pricey and more complex. I may be more flexible and customizable but be honest here your wife is probably going to want to play games and check facebook and email.....

Good call. And I have heard the Xoom is pretty pricey. I haven't priced a tablet because I have no interest inone.
 
I've seen mixed reviews on the Xoom and the only people who seem to really praise it as being equal with the iPad are the Android fanboys.

Xoom is also 800$ compared to a 500$ starting point for the iPad 2, even cheaper for iPad 1, and there aren't nearly as many games/apps/etc out for the Xoom as there are for iPad. I'm by no means an Apple fanboy and I love me some Android, but right now, the only way to justify a Xoom over iPad is if you are a legitimate Android freak and absolutely loathe Apple. The Xoom, as jms mentioned, is way more flexible/customizable than the iPad, which is nice, but not 300$ more "nice".
 
On the PSN Network being down:

Anonymous (or at least what could be considered as "the face" of it could be and even then, it's a hive collective, not a person) mentioned that they were going to pause on attacking Sony a little while ago.

Something about them feeling bad that people like themselves (specifically gamers) were affected by their hacking antics.

HOWEVER... more than Anonymous is involved with the downtime here.

Splinter group hackers, freelancers, etc.
