My 2007 computer still plays everything I want to at a decent-good level. Half the stuff I listed on the previous page is a couple years old and will look fine.
PC Gamers are a different breed from console gamers, and thats not a bad thing. I take pride in finding the best parts on NewEgg/TigerDirect and piecing together a machine that can beast any game out there. If a game is multi-platform, I can guarantee you the best looking experience will be on PC. Will it be on everyone's PC like it's on everyone's console? No. And thats something a lot of people are willing to live with. I played Far Cry 2 on 360, 1080p, yada yada, and it was nice. I got it for cheap on PC and it just looked so much smoother.
Plus, a huge part of my computing life is open world games. Shit like Football Manager, Civ4/5, the Sims, SimCity, MineCraft, etc that can't be replicated in any real way on console. Not to mention games like Left 4 Dead 2 where you can enjoy it on console, but the real enjoyment comes after when I get to play stuff like shot for shot remakes of Dawn of the Dead. Console gamers miss out on that enjoyment. A vibrant mod community is something that's always been a big selling point for me and what ties me to PC games.
Obviously, I enjoy console gaming and have all three systems. But if a game is multi-platform and I know the PC version got a modicum of love, I am buying there.
Plus, Steam >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ANY console distribution system. Fuck Gamestop right in the face
