In the tunnel, Coach Santiago stands in front of his defensive crew and barks out his last words of encouragement before they dart out to the field.

"This is our home! Our house! I don't care what quarter it is, what the score is, what the situation is; you give it your all on every single down. You do not back down! You do not surrender. I want DOMINANCE! I want to see yellow swarming the entire field. Give them NOTHING! Who's gonna' make a play today?"

"I WILL!" Everyone cried.

"Who's gonna' take this game over?"

"I WILL!"

"SOUTHERN MISS!"

"RISE TO THE TOP!"

Coach Santiago and his defense stormed out to the field and let out a blood curdling yell. A river of yellow flowed and leaped up, exciting their home crowd of 32,000.

"And the first play of scrimmage for the year in M.M. Roberts Stadium will showcase the Golden Eagles defense. The defense was the downside of a 8-5 Southern Miss team who had no problem making up for it on offense. We'll see how the defense fairs today in the Rivalry in Dixie against LA Tech, who they squeak by, 13-12, last year.

And it all begins with new defensive coordinator, Mike Santiago, who Coach Larry Fedora quoted as 'one of the most inspiring men he's ever met'. Likes to run multiple scheme and knows how to utilize them. And seeing the man's history, he clearly knows what he's doing. Played with Jamie Sharper and Darren Sharper in high school, Mike Tomlin at William and Mary, won three straight high school championships at the highest level in Arizona State High School football. So, it's going to be interesting what he'll bring to the table this year.

But, here we go. We've got 1st and 10. Ball at the 20. LA Tech has Tarik Hakmi in the gun. Defense in the 3-4. Here's the snap. Southern Miss is sending the seven and the pressure gets to Hakmi! Sacked for a loss of 7! And it's Ronnie Thornton, the senior who makes first contact!

Oh, you've gotta' love that. This defense looks amped up and ready to go. I've never seen them play with such fire as Santiago fuels them more after the sack!"

3rd and 9. Still scoreless in the middle of the 2nd Quarter. And this place is rockin'! Five sacks already from this defense, looking for six! Here's the snap.

Hakmi drops. Looks quickly and fires... INTERCEPTED! First turnover of the day and it's Deron Wilson! Gives a quick spin move! Looking for daylight... and is brought down at the 30!

Well, Larry Fedora said at the end of the first his offense needed field position. The defense creates a turnover and now you're in scoring position. time to punch it in."

"3rd and 15. Ball at the 19 of LA Tech. The crowd sounds like 90,000 here in M.M. This defense has been all over this offense! The snap is low. Hakmi recovers... OHHH WHAT A HIT BY RONNIE THORNTON! OHHH! He just blew up Hakmi from the blindside. Never saw it coming and he is not getting up as Thornton yells towards the crowd celebrating his third sack of the day.

Just. Wow. I have never seen a defense swarm the way Southern Miss has today. That's the ninth sack of the game and we're only three quarters in. LA Tech has 80 total offensive yards. Only 8 rushing yards. And we'll take a time out as Hakmi is still down on the field.

"Listen to me. We've been gettin' at them all game. Keep it at this intensity all game. It's 7-0 right now. I don't care if it's 10-0, 14-0, 45-0, you don't give an inch. You DO NOT give up. Stay in this together. You're a unit. Let's get out there and keep kicking there ass!"

"3rd and 6 and LA Tech is pinned near their own goal line. Hakmi drops back. A rare four man rush from Southern Miss today. Hakmi looks. Looking. Looking. Unloads.

INTERCEPTED! Kendrick Presley with the interception... and man, I can't believe how alive this defense is. The change from last year is day and night. Two interceptions. Eleven sacks. Three turnovers. 97 total yards and we're in the fourth quarter. Just wow.

Twenty six seconds left. The Bulldogs have entered into the Southern Miss red zone for only the third time today. Will they finally be able to crack the Golden Eagles? Here we go. Hakmi drops back. He's looking for Ikharo and it's picked off again! This time it's Walters in the endzone and he's running it OUT OF THE ENDZONE! Santiago is on the sideline waving him on!

"First and ten from the Idaho State 31. Here comes Washington State, first time in the newly installed Pistol package. Here's the snap. Tuel fakes the handoff. Looks. Has Stormo right over the middle and hit him in stride. Too easy. Touchdown Washington State."

"There's the arm." Patterson said to himself, watching his offense come to the sideline. "Now, can he be a winner?"

As Jeff Tuel pumps his helmet in the air as he comes to the sideline and embraces Head Coach Paul Wulff.

"That's why you're the leader of this team!" Wulff said, in his ear. "Hell of a throw, boy. Hell of a throw!"

Patterson looked over at his backup quarterback, Marshall Lobbestael, and watched as he cheered on Tuel and the returning offense. He walks over to the two of them and high fives Tuel.

"Great play out there Jeff." Patterson said. "Keep the pedal on the metal and 1st string might be able to get rest quicker than you think."

"Second and ten. Tuel setting up in an empty five wide set as he is directly behind center. Here's the snap. Tuel, looking right side. Steps up delivers a strike right over the middle! That's Bobby Ratliff with the catch. And he... breaks a tackle and is finally brought down at the 7 yard line.

Another sharp strike by Tuel and he looks to be in prime form for this year. A gain of 28 on that play.

So, after a holding call, we've got 1st and goal at the 17. Tuel drops back. Looking. Finds a man and it's Hersey wide open! He dives! Touchdown Washington State! And just like that, Wazzu's up 13-0!

"That's a perfect pass." Wulff said, talking with Patterson. "Made the read in time. He's really getting the tight ends involved. Playcalling is brilliant. Execution's flawless."

"Maybe he is the guy after all." Patterson said.

"We're producing. That's all I want from this team." Wulff replied.

"Washington State comes out again ready to pour it on. They'll start this drive at the 41 after the 25 yard return by Justin. I-Formation, Mitz in the backfield. Here's the snap by Tuel. Hands it off to Mitz side step to the right and he's OFF TO THE RACES! GAPING HOLE in the heart of the defense and no one's gonna' catch him! 20, 10... touchdown Wazzu! A home run play by Logwone Mitz on the first play of the drive puts the Cougars up 20-0! 59 yards!"

"Atta' boy Logwone!" Wulff cheers on his offense as they come back to the sidelines. "Let's keep this momentum rolling boys. We've still got two more quarters!"

"11:35 to go here in the Third Quarter. Cougars are up 24-0 and are at their own 46 yard line. Tuel's in the Pistol. He takes the snap. Drops back. Idaho State's bringing pressure... and they got Tuel. Second time they've gotten to him today. And... Tuel's getting up slowly and he's holding his right hand.

Tuel took a shot and came down very hard. When he tried to get up, he used only his left hand. We can only hope he's going to be ok as he was due for a big season for the Cougars this year. And the trainers are taking a look at him, but here comes Marshall Lobbestael, the senior on to the field."

"Alright, Marshall," Coach Patterson said in his headset with a smile, "here's your moment. Let's open up the play book here. Pistol Trips Left Slants Z Sluggo. Go get 'em."

Wazzu breaks the huddle and it'll be 2nd and 21 after the huge loss on the sack. And, you've gotta worry about Tuel and how this offense will run for the rest of the year if he's out for any great amount of time. Idaho State's in a Dime package; Wazzu's got trips left, Ratliff solo on the right side. Lobbestael takes the snap from the Pistol. Give's a very quick pump right side. Now he throws a lob pass and the defender bit on the fake! Ratliff's all alone and makes the catch! He's in stride! No one in front of him! TOUCHDOWN WAZZU! Brilliant play by Lobbestael and Offensive Coordinator Marshall Patterson is all smiles!"

As Tuel is taken to the locker room, Patterson greets Lobbestael to the sideline with a side chest bump.

"Perfect!" Patterson said, slapping Lobbestael on the helmet. "Sold that pump fake beautifully. That's what I wanna' see!"
