It's the other way.
This firing was a mistake. Whisenhunt is a very good coach, nobody is winning without a QB in this league, especially the collection of stiffs Arizona has. You have no chance.
Those QB's sucked because of Whizz's complete inability to manage them, develop them, or install confidence in them in any way. When Matt Leinert was the guy of the future, Whizz yanked him the first time he so much as tripped over his shoe, or put him in only in in garbage time. Say what you want about Leinert, but Whizz never took a single action with Leinert that made anyone say "NOW THAT's how you bring along a rookie!" and then torpedoed that season by cutting him right before it started. Leinert was right: all he wanted was for the team to "ride or die" with him. Whizz couldn't even give the highly drafted rookie a full season with no questions asked. So what if he tanked? like Max Hall or Derek Anderson were better choices? didn't help the win column any.
Since then, he yanks quarterbacks left and right, legitimately did something like start Max Hall, Skelton, and Hoyer. His boy, Russ Grimm, hasn't been able to coach any effort out of the offensive line since Warner retired (and it's not like the team hasn't tried ;they've spent money and draft picks on the line) Don't give me that crap that it was the rosters fault. Those quarterbacks sucked because of bad coaching and stupid decisions. If you want to watch a horror movie, pick any random 8 games from the Cardinal season and watch as Whizz calls deep pass after deep pass to double and triple covered Fitzgerald. Like, he knew his guys were limited, and yet he did nothing to protect them from their weaknesses or to instill confidence in them. It's splitting hairs to say that the talent itself was on Graves ; Whizz had the juice there and theres nothing Graves would have done that didn't have Whizz's approval.
Whoever they hire as the next HC, more than anything else at all: They need to pick a fucking quarterback and stick with him. Musical chairs doesn't get it done at the NFL level and it only works on the collegiate level with vastly superior talent. That, more than any other reason, is why they fired him. People here in the Valley are elated.
