In it is a 1964 story written for Esquire about Floyd Patterson, a man who at one time was champion until he was put down by the legendary Sonny Liston.

I personally found it interesting (and as you'll find in the comments at the bottom of the posting) that this is basically the most candid interview I've ever read or heard about from a sports figure... EVER.

Once more, that this is a man who acknowledges that he sees himself as a coward even though he's made TONS of money as a champion while his family lived comfortably and he himself was a good fighter to a point.

-It was both tragic and somewhat comical to read that Patterson had a set of disguises/personal mannerisms lined up in the event that he lost a fight.

Not because of it being a "routine" or "a thing to do" but because he was terrified about what the crowd who paid to see him thought about him personally after a loss.

It's definitely worth a read if you want to see a brutally honest take about what it's like to live as the person who's lost and has to carry that baggage day-to-day.

-Do note that this article was before the bouts with Muhammad Ali.

Patterson refers to himself as a coward because of how he dealt with defeats while others can go out partying. Talked about how he hated himself as a child because he saw his father busting his ass at work while young Floyd dropped out of school.

Despite his feelings about confrontations outside the ring and things like never looking an opponent in the eyes before a fight......he still loved boxing.

You really do rarely hear this stuff from guys today (certain bits maybe but rarely so cutting) and it's a reminder that while fighters are in incredible physical condition and intensely trained....they're not all these would beasts who act on one level.

Floyd grew up with little in Bed Stuy, became a wealthy world champion and still struggled with mental parts of the sport to a degree.

He was a great fighter, and at the same time...his true thoughts were unlike those you'd assume a top fighter to have.

After taking an incredible amount of media and fan heat for scoring Saturday's Mayweather-Canelo fight a 114-114 draw, CJ Ross has decided to take a leave of absence from scoring boxing bouts.

Veteran boxing judge CJ Ross has notified the Nevada State Athletic Commission that she will be taking a leave of absence from the sport following her highly controversial 114-114 scoring of this past Saturday night's Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez fight in Las Vegas.

Boxing media and fans were stunned that anyone could have scored the fight a draw, scrutinizing the scoring even more than when Ross last year scored Timothy Bradley a 115-113 winner over Manny Pacquiao. Ross said after the fight that she stood by the score, but the 64-year-old Ross reportedly feels bad that the focus is on her, and not on Mayweather, leading to her leave of absence.

To be very honest, that wouldn't be a good reason to leave the sport -- I mean, it is, I guess, but there now remains the issue of Nevada not openly dealing with this sort of thing. But, really, that was never expected.
