2009 SB Loser - Jim Caldwell (did not win another playoff game, fired 2 seasons later)
2008 SB Loser - Ken Whisenhunt (1 playoff win after, fired 4 seasons later)
2006 SB Loser - Lovie Smith (1 playoff win after, fired 6 seasons later)
2005 SB Loser - Mike Holmgren (2 playoff wins after, fired 3 seasons later)
2004 SB Loser - Andy Reid (3 playoff wins after, fired 8 seasons later)

Bill Cowher is the only "recent" exception…

Lost the 1995 SB. Won 9 future playoff games and won the 2005 Super Bowl. Retired after the 06 season.

And there was a stretch where Cowher's Steelers went 3 years without the playoffs in the late 90s and 2000.

Generally, the days of Cowher and Fisher spending a decade in the same spot after losing the SB are gone. Plus, the SB losing coaches do not tend to have major success in the playoffs after the fact. Only Andy Reid has won 3 playoff games and he spent more time in Philly during the span than any coach since Jeff Fisher's time after 99 in Tennessee.

For the rest of those guys, it's a pretty direct correlation between QB and Job Security. Caldwell (Manning injured), Reeves (Elway retired), Wisenhunt (from Warner to shit). Martz lost Warner.

That only leaves Jim Fassel and Bill Callahan unaccounted for.

Guys who lose the SB, do not tend to have much playoff success afterwards. Even Reid in Philly (who were a good team for all but the final 2 seasons IIRC), only won 3 total games in his final 8 years there. Go back to Fisher in TEN, only 2 wins in over 10 years he spent there after 1999.

If the Steelers can't come back and Big Ben doesn't complete the pass to Holmes to beat Arizona, Whisenhunt is almost definitely still coaching there and his leash is longer. If Martz beats Bill in 2001, is he worn out in St. Louis as soon as he proved to be?

Losing this game can have a big impact on the success of a head coach with that team moving forward. Of course, there are other variables, like you mentioned the status of the QB, the stability of the owners (in Cowher's case, the Rooney family), etc.

Just interesting to think about how tonight's loser may be gone after handful of seasons. Weird also because everyone considers both of them to be among the better coaches in the league.

But at the same time, if the Steelers don't win that Super Bowl (which would make Tomlin a two time loser in the SB), do you think he would have been fired by Pittsburgh by now? I don't.

In 1998 Dan Reeves was coaching the Falcons, who lost to Elway and the Broncos in the Super Bowl.

Reeves was just old and his RB wore down from getting 8,000 carries the year before. Also that was the one season that Chris Chandler managed to not get hurt.!
