The Hobbit

I know there's some mixed opinions about the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy on this board, but I'm a huge fan of both the books and the movies. It looks like Peter Jackson will be stretching the source material even more with the Hobbit, as it's being split into two movies. But here's a first look at photo's from the film!

Yeah, but the entire Lord of the Rings shoot (all three movies) was barely longer.

I assume they'll each be 2.5 hours+, I'm more curious to see where the first film will end. Somewhere around Mirkwood maybe? With Gandalf and the White Council at Dol Guldur?

I'll see it in the theater. However, I hate when hollywood does things bass-akwards, just to make money. They did it with StarWars and now LOTR/Hobbit.

Also, I think it's pretty natural to read LOTR before The Hobbit. I can only speak for the people I've known personally, but they've all done so.

Can't wait...as a whole piece of film, LOTR is tough to top when you combine all forces, its like Voltron.

I read the Hobbit first. In fact I read it long before I ever read LOTR. Wife was the same way. If I recall correctly, the Hobbit was written with children in mind. So it would only make sense.

Bingo. I read The Hobbit in 3rd grade and because of that it'll always hold just as close a place in my imagination as any of Tolkein's works. I guess I just had a lot more imagination back in the day... Because of this I'm far more excited about these movies than I ever was for LOTR, and I too wonder where they'll split it. Early reports I read suggested that it would truly be split between There and then Back Again but I felt the second movie would have to include more of a bridge between The Hobbit and LOTR for that to happen. Mirkwood seems reasonable.

I read the Hobbit first. Back in the fifth grade, when the Fellowship of the Ring was about to come out, I got all four books from the book club stuff they pass out in schools. I finished the Hobbit right before seeing the Fellowship, and read the trilogy afterwords. I still have the set, the books are worn to hell now from multiple readings.

The there and back again is a logical point to split the movies, but what would happen in the second movie? It's been a while since I read the Hobbit but I don't remember much happening after the Battle of Five Armies. I know they're obviously adding a lot, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom will both return. But still...

Frodos only going to be a narrator from memory.

And alot of the added stuff is apparently going to be stuff that was happening "off-the-page" for a lack of a better term during the book like when Gandalf goes off to have a meeting with the rest of the Wizards.

They also want it to end before the Fellowship of the Ring starts, so they are going to show some shit that occured between the Dragon going down and Bilbo's party.

Remember seeing an interview where Jackson was talking about wanting to show stuff like Gollum ending up and escaping from Mordor and Aragon/Gandalf hunting his scrawny little arse down and Sauron's rise again (which had been hinted at in the Hobbit book)
