When the murderous bandit Ben Wade (Crowe) is captured, he must be put on the train to Yuma where he will be tried and executed. Only problem is, not many want to make the dangerous journey to Yuma. Dan Evans (Bale), a Civil War veteran, volunteers to take Wade to the station to put him to justice.
The acting by Crowe (Wade) and Bale (Evans) is absolutely sensational. Even though Wade is a murderer, it is difficult at times to decipher whether he is good or bad. Some of his actions make him seem he's good, but others make him seem bad. This makes Wade a very complex character. Evans is also a complex character, but I won't go into details as it might spoil the plot. Also, I absolutely loved the sound in this movie. From the epic gun fights and the crazy train robberies, the sound keeps you on the edge of the seat. I also liked how this movie deviated from the norms of the whole Western film genre, as the "bad guy" (Wade) could have possibly been a protagonist. In most Westerns, there are clear cut protagonists and antagonists. For example, In Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, Clint Eastwood's character is clearly the protagonist. Anyone that goes against him is clearly the antagonist.
One thing I didn't like about this movie was that it was slow at times. The plot is pretty slow for the first half of the movie, but it becomes more exciting as Wade's posse comes for him at Yuma. I also found the dialogue sometimes to be very predictable and artificial. There were times where Bale's character, Evans, said some things and it did not sound plausible.
Overall, this was a very good Western film, which has plenty of action and violence. Although, it's focus is on development of the main characters, Wade and Evans. If you like complex characters, good sound, and deviation from the Western film genre, then you should enjoy this movie.
My Rating: 9/10
