Titans likely to cut Chris Johnson

We are talking about Chris Johnson. He got a multi-million dollar payday and played down... yes they were right in cutting him. It doesn't matter how long your career is, if you demand a huge payday then lay down... you are essentially stealing... that is a character flaw.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Tennessee Titans still have not made a decision on Chris Johnson, according to a league source.

The Titans running back is set to make $8M next season but does not have clarity on his situation yet, with the team not committed on his status for 2014, a source said. Team officials met with Johnson's agent, Joel Segal, at the combine but are still mulling their options.

Johnson underwent a minor offseason procedure, and played through the knee injury last season, in what was a down season for him (1,077 yards, 3.9 yards per carry, 6 TDs). Many around the league anticipate the Titans, with a new coaching staff in place under Ken Whisenhunt, will move on from Johnson given his high salary and what is usually a soft market for running backs.

The Titans are under no pressure to do anything immediately, with the start of the league year not until March 11, when free agency formally begins.

One way or another, Chris Johnson almost certainly won't be with the Titans next month when the team reports for offseason workouts. Johnson was reportedly on the trade block in early March. And even with multiple teams interested in his services, his $8 million base salary in 2014 is prohibitive, which is why he'll likely be released, perhaps as soon as next week, according to CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

As for possible landing spots, the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt thinks Johnson ends up with the Falcons, who signed 30-year-old Steven Jackson last offseason.

At the annual NFL meetings earlier this week, new Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said the team will continue to weigh their options with the 29-year-old Johnson, the team's 2008 first-round pick.

"This whole thing is a process," Whisenhunt said, via the Tennessean. "There's not a timetable on doing it. We're trying to do what's best for the team. We're certainly sensitive to try and resolve this whole deal sooner than later. It's just a process that you go through. I hope the fan base understands we're trying to do what's best for our team. All that matters is what we do on Sundays and winning those games."

Meanwhile, Johnson, who averaged a career-low 3.9 yards per carry last season, plans to show up for the Titans' offseason workouts that begin April 7.

"Yeah, I plan on being there," Johnson told the the Tennessean Tuesday. "If I haven't been traded or released by that time, I will show up in Nashville and be ready to go from day one with the team. There's been a lot of speculation about the future, and where I'll be. But I am under contract with the Tennessee Titans. That's my team. And whatever team I am with when the offseason program starts, that is where I am showing up.

"I want to run and lift with the team and do what I can to make the team better. If April 7 gets here and I am on the Tennessee roster, then I am going to show up ready to go."

I don't want the players going Albert Haynesworth (clearly a piece of shit) ... but the NFL is the only major pro sport without fully-guaranteed contracts, but could be North America's favourite sport and second most lucrative behind MLB.
And, now, a team can draft an RB in the 5th round, and possibly get a primetime player for minimum wage for four years ... and then discard him because RBs only last 5-6 years in most cases.
That NFL players still have these kinds of deals when compared to MLB, NHL and NBA baffles me.

The NFL players union needs to step up its game. If there was ever a major league sport where the players deserved guaranteed contracts, it's the NFL.

CJ always received too much hate after signing his big deal.

Did he lose a step? Yeah, definitely. But his decline was moreso because of the vanilla offensive schemes and the lack of stability up front. CJ did a lot of great things from 2008-2010, but he also had one of the best offensive lines to help him reach the second level. The line has never been the same since Kevin Mawae retired.

Hope he goes to a team and a coach who is creative on offense. No doubt in my mind he can still play, just has to find the right fit.

His elusiveness is gone, though part of that could be because of the decline in talent along the offensive line. CJ2K is still one of the fastest players in the NFL, and some coach will be sure to utilize that speed to great effect.

I hate the idea of guaranteed contracts in any sport as far as the player goes, but I agree with having cap repercussions if you decide to release a player, regardless of guaranteed money or not.
