Tony Gonzalez likely retiring

If it is the last game for 16-year pro Tony Gonzalez, he certainly didn't go out with a whimper. The Falcons tight end racked up eight catches for 78 yards and a score in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. After the game, Gonzalez certainly sounded like someone not planning on returning for a 17th year.

“It's probably the last time I'm going to wear that uniform,” Gonzalez said after the game, according to the team's website. “I didn't want to take it off, to tell you the truth. All good things come to an end and, like I said all season long, this is probably my last one. What an unbelievable ride.”

Despite never reaching the Super Bowl in his career with the Falcons and Chiefs, Gonzalez was adament that he would have no regrets when remembering his career.

“I don't want anybody out there to feel sorry for me,” Gonzalez told the website. “I've had a great ride -- an unbelievable ride. A great career, from the Falcons to the Chiefs, it's been awesome. I have no regrets. Not one.”

Gonzalez will go down as the greatest tight end in history, and his 1,242 catches are second to only Jerry Rice.

Though he was selected to his 13th Pro Bowl this season, Gonzalez reportedly told the team's website that he will probably not be attending.

I'm not going to live by "if's". I'm going by what's happened. The facts. You could say the same about Barry Sanders (unanimously) if he played on another team. It's all about the facts.

Just my opinion, but I still think Kellen Winslow Sr. is the greatest TE of all time. I don't dispute Gonzalez's greatness, but Winslow did it in an era without the pussy (but understandable) rules defences have to deal with these days.

i get the ifs...but even without the ifs you have guys like Mackey, Sharpe, Christianson, Casper, Newsome, Ditka.

Gonzalas is one of the all time greats and you can make an argument that he is the goat. not my choice, but he is still great

I always exclude the TE's who didn't block worth a shit, from the GOAT discussion. That is a very key part of playing the position and Gonzalez really did do it all.

Also there is more to life than playing football. I would never call someone stupid for leaving just because they want to do something else with their life.

I thought the story Aikman told about working Gonzalez out as a high school recruit was interesting as hell.

Great career for that guy, too bad he's the Dan Marino of TE's.

Would be awesome if he comes back, arguably the most impactful offseason move the Falcons could make is having him change his mind on retirement. He owes us nothing though, and has nothing to prove. It is completely understandable if he wants to spend time with his family and enjoy life after football.
