McNabb had far more playoff success than Romo ever had.
IMO, the contract that Romo got should be a contract awarded to someone who's at least had some playoff success.

I think the more interesting question is: In their primes, who is the better quarterback?

If they were to go their separate ways, what's Dallas suppose to do? Go after Cutler? He's apparently now the biggest name in the 2014 FA market for the position. Besides, throwing the lack of playoff success away (i know…), he's a top 10 QB, no? If you get one of those guys, you have to do whatever you can to keep them.

I'm not a Romo hater or anything, but the big deal in my mind is:
A) He's 33
B) He never wins the big one ... ever
C) If he sucks this year, you're regretting this contract and the chance to rebuild with a new quarterback.

Romo is a good quarterback, but also a choker. The Cowboys could have ridden out the last year of his contract and franchised him the next year. Giving him $55 million guaranteed seems nuts. Flacco's contract a bit goofy too, but he's not 33.

I think Empire nailed it. Jerry doesn't want to go back to experimenting with young guys till they find the guy that sticks again, and he's better than any free agents on the horizon. I don't see any reason why he shouldn't be able to play this entire contract out either with how protected his position is. Even if something happens in the middle of the contract and they have to cut ties, 55 million is nothing in the long run for the Cowboys.

But did you really secure the QB position? This has a lot to do with the cap, but I was on here at the end of the season saying that Dallas should trade Romo and received some groans in the process. But you have a coach who is possibly a lame duck, who could be out if the team doesn't make the playoffs. Romo laid an egg in yet another big game against Washington, and there is still the perception he can't win the big game. Romo is also over 30, and guaranteeing him $55 million is a dumb decision.

I would have traded Romo to get extra picks, and drafted a developmental QB. Kyle Orton is a perfectly fine starter for this team, because the pieces are there to install a vertical passing offense. Or you let him play out the year, not turn around and hand him $55 million. It might be because I am a Redskins fan, but I can't see the positives going on here, it's only negatives.

The perception that he can't win the big game is bullshit. He has won big games and choked big games away but as long as he doesn't believe everything the media spews, it doesn't matter. That Redskin game was horrid and his interceptions were god awful but the defense allowed 200 yards on the ground. Romo also had a stretch of games where he was absolutely phenominal, but one bad game in week 17 erases those games from everyone's minds.

Also, Romo > Orton. Every. Single. Time.

The fact of the matter is that Romo is a damn good QB in a league where you need to have a good QB. The draft class isn't a good one for QBs, Romo is better than any other FA QB out there, and Orton sucks.

Is the contract bad? Yes. But that doesn't make it an awful move.

I was without a team for three years, just watching red-zone and the Cowboys kinda grew on me and just started to root for them. Kind of an organic growth over the three previous years, then last year I just decided to go all out. Never "switched" teams before, but, I found it is possible. I have no interest in the Bucs anymore. At first, I was just pissed, now, I don't even care. I gotta say though, the new defensive staff has a "nostalgic" feel to it lol...
