Top 5 PG's in the NBA

So I was listening to 98.5 in Boston on Friday, and they were having the age old debate of who you would take on your team if it was just a 1-season deal. One of the hosts, Felger, believed that Rajon Rondo was not a top-15 player in the NBA. Another host said he believed Rondo was one of the best players in the game.

Was wondering in order from 1-5 who you believed were the top 5 point guards in the NBA. For arguments sake, we will consider Derrick Rose as if he was healthy right now. I think it's an interesting topic because you have 7-8 guys who could compete for the 5 spots. For example, is Jrue Holiday inching closer to top 5 status? Does Tony Parker deserve some interest? Just interested to see what some of the basketball heads think.

Don't know if Kyrie is top 5 but I actually thought about him too. Just doesn't put up the assist numbers yet. Then again, he plays for Cleveland, so I wouldn't give up the ball to anyone not named Varejao either :yao:

I'm not considering DRose healthy and none of you should either.

Deron Williams' shots are down this year but his assists are essentially on pace to be equal to last year's number (when he played with a FAR inferior group of guys). It's only 20 games into the season but right now, his FG% and 3PT%...if they stay along the same path, they'll both be the worst of his career. He'll still probably up it all and average 20+ PPG.

Chris Paul has been a beast for practically his entire career (even when he played a career low 45 games in 09-10, he averaged a double-double). Right now, he's the league leader in steals (he's been the NBA steals leader 5 times).

We've all seen Rondo and Rose dominate games individually (Rondo has some of those against the Knicks, Rose against most teams). Their shooting is bad. Rose, before the injury, through over half of the 66 game schedule last year was putting up some bad shooting percentages. But, perhaps a testament to them, they still can take over games. If either or both were to improve those shots, HOLY SHIT, scary good.

I'm not so high on Westbrook because I think if he's in a situation like Irving or Rose, where he's THE #1 guy...I'm not sold he is still as dangerous. Not fair to him, but perhaps it's part of the whole Pippen deal. You play with one of the best players in the game, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

John Wall could be in the picture but haven't seen enough. Same with Damian Lillard, the rookie has played exception, but no way I'm putting him above any of the guys I have below.


Call me a Chris Paul mark but I love his game, he's the only one I can say for sure. Everyone else may change based on the day.

John Wall should be nowhere in this discussion IMO. He hasn't done shit yet to warrant being talked about with the elite PGs. Lillard is someone I forgot about, but like you said it's far too early to group him among these guys as well.

Deron Williams hasn't been the same since he moved to New Jersey.. He's still a top 5 PG but he's nowhere near the same guy that was in conversations with Chris Paul for #1 a few years ago..

TP isn't passing anyone on that top 5 there's no reason to name him on the next up list.

Kyrie Irving has had injury issues since college. I'd like to see him prove a little more durable before I consider him for the top 5. The same can probably be said for Rubio I guess but I like Rubio better than Kyrie for some reason..

We know he's not tricking anyone as a shooter. What do you think he needs to improve on?

No he's absolutely top 5 IMO but he'll never be the top guy because he makes a lot of dumb decisions and can sometimes pass up on the shot in lieu of getting assists. I think his defense is a bit overrated because of his steal numbers he puts up even though his gambles sometimes lead to easy baskets for the opposition but I still believe him to be at the top of the list in terms of on-ball defense along the perimeter.

He's not much of a leader but he's one hell of a point guard.
