Top Five Quarterbacks In The NFL

The Chargers were 13-3 last season... with a team that was 31st in rushing. Philip Rivers went 14-2 and 11-5 in other seasons. I'm not following on this one. Sure, the Chargers always seem to struggle at the beginning, but they usually shut people up by November/December (this year excluded).

I hate Philip Rivers, but he's had arguably his best season this year and the Chargers blew this year. I would take him over Roethlisberger. I hesistate with saying I would take him over Brady, but that's more of a coaching and system thing. However, I would rank him over Brady.

What has Rivers done in the playoffs? A major point of my post was that people judge and ridicule these QBs based on their playoff performances

That's what I don't get. How can you say Peyton Manning is #1 and Roethlisberger is #3-#5 and then say that "post-season matters most". Because if the rings and the post-season matters and not so much the regular season, then there's no way that your Top 3 list shouldn't look like this:

3. Peyton Manning

I think that you're slightly missing the point, at least regarding what some people, including myself, are saying.

Personally, I look at a players entire body of work. Career, regular season, post season. All things considered, under those circumstances it isn't hard for me to say something like, as of today:

Tier 1: Manning
Tier 2: Brady
Tier 3: Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Brees, Rivers

My problem is that the opinion seems to sway so vehemently from each side of the argument. Some people focus on postseason too much. Some people are too anxious to take away credit for postseason performance b/c it's a "team" game. Some people are focus too much on regular season stats. Some people are too anxious to take those away as well. There are so few people in the world, and on here as well it would seem, that are incapable of looking at these QBs and trying their best to assess fairly based on all of the available data. At least, in my opinion.

All of that said, I agree with Panda as well, a tier system is really the only fair way to do this. There is far too much shifting among 3-6 or 7 in a given season to say any are a lock for a certain spot over someone else.

I think that is VERY FAIR Seth, in my opinion Ben gets left out of all these conversations because he doesnt throw for 350 a game and lets admit it the Steelers dont have a "sexy" offense. Ben just wins and makes plays.

Hell this season he lost four games by 3 points, and another by 4 pts, where were his comeback drives then? Assuredly any of the top 5 QB's on that list would have at least one of those wins.

How are comebacks and game winners not important to QB's? Shouldn't every QB be able to win games? If you're good you have to have some game winners right? Some comebacks? Something to show you're the reason the team won games. All the greats have game winning drives.

Now when it comes to the greatest QB's of all time, comeback and game winning drives are important. Obviously it isn't a "stat" per-say, considering the fact that one QB could be trailing by 2 every game in his career and have a ton of these comebacks, and another could never been in a comeback situation. That is understood and obvious. However, when you have a QB who had just 5 game winning drives on his career, and he lost 5 games by 4 or less points this season, and I hear comment's like "I wouldn't want any other QB right now" that's just irritating.

edit: 15 of Rodgers 20 losses were by a touchdown or less. 11 were by fewer than 3 points. Where were his come from behind or game winning drives then?

We all know what Rodgers is, he throws for tons of yards, rushes plenty of touchdowns, but he's lost a lot of close games in his career and that's a fact. Whoever wants to take Rodgers over Manning, Brady, Brees or Big Ben can have him. I'll take the guy who's going to win the close games.

We all know what Rodgers is, he throws for tons of yards, rushes plenty of touchdowns, but he's lost a lot of close games in his career and that's a fact. Whoever wants to take Rodgers over Manning, Brady, Brees or Big Ben can have him. I'll take the guy who's going to win the close games.

A ton of his "close losses" came from overtime games in which he NEVER got to touch the football, his special teams never came through when he set up reasonable field goals, and his defense dumped on him after he put them in a winning position.
