Kickoffs in major college football will move from the 30 to the 35-yard line next season, a change intended to keep players safer.

The change was approved this week by the NCAA playing rules oversight panel, which also said the running start by players on the kicking team will be limited to 5 yards

The NFL moved up kickoffs 5 yards this past season and touchbacks increased dramatically. Another new NCAA rule involving free kicks will move touchbacks from the 20 to the 25-yard line, a move intended to encourage more touchbacks.

The panel also approved a rule that will require a player who loses his helmet during a play to leave the game for one play, and there are also new guidelines regarding blocking below the waist and blocking on punt returns. Players will also be prohibited from leaping over blockers when trying to block punts.

I think you'll see special teams completely eliminated from football at some point...

I'll be honest, I'm kind of torn. Most college football players will never play professionally. They don't have the financial windfall of professional players therfore I think it's important to protect them.

On ther other hand this is football and they are compensated, whether you agree they get enough or not.

Moving the kicks up to the 35 didn't really affect the pro game as far as I was concerened. Plus, I don't think your average college kicker would have the leg to put it in the back of the endzone on a consistent basis. I think you'll still see returns.

Um, no it doesn't. The incentive would then be on the kicking team not to kick it in the end zone, because they are sacrificing five extra yards if they do.

LOL, and you seriously think kickers are gonna kick it short to avoid giving an extra 5 yards, and risk a return and/or field position?

Somebody better call the NCAA about this, they intended to lower returns and its not gonna work!!

Are you serious? I don't think that, I know so, since college teams already employ that strategy even without the rule change. If kicking it out of the end zone is an automatic start of possession at the 25, then teams will kick it high and hope to tackle the returner inside of the 25.

LOL at thinking this will encourage more touchbacks. Making a touchback less valuable to the kicking team will encourage teams to do it more often. Right. Teams will elect to give up five extra yards on every kickoff.

I don't dislike the thread, I just don't understand the need to claim that this is the pussification of football. There is a huge difference between a thread beginning discussion on the merits of this new rule and making some thread about how this is pussifying football, by a fan who doesn't even play the game. If James Harrison created this thread, maybe there would be validity to use of the word pussification.

Take it for what it's worth, but Terrell Davis wouldn't have a career if he didn't make a great special teams tackle in a pre-season game.

It makes you wonder how many great players will not be given an opportunity because there are less plays to make an impact.

Knowing that you get the ball at the 25 makes it easier for the receiving team to take a knee in the endzone and accept the touchback. Both sides are therefore going to be more prone to taking a touchback. Wasn't a logic fail at all.

The flip side is that the kicking team will be less likely to try to get a touchback, because the "reward" is lower. The risk-reward of giving up a return and pinning the returning team inside their own 15 or 20 has now been shifted. Many college teams already avoid touchbacks, instead kicking it high and towards the sideline, gambling that they can net 3-4 extra yards of field position by making a good tackle. This practice is not going to decrease as the difference between a touchback and a non-touchback becomes more pronounced.

Every college kicker isn't NFL quality.. hell only a handful of kickers even turn pro.

There will still be plenty of kicks that are returned.
