The UFC had allowed fans to get pretty worked up about a potential super-fight between middleweight champion Anderson Silva and welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre after Silva beat Vitor Belfort at UFC 126. Since then the promotion has apparently backed off, with GSP being quite vocal about his hesitance to make the jump. Now word is coming from Silva's camp that Yushin Okami may finally be getting his shot at UFC: Rio: (via Tatame.com)



According to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, former UFC heavyweight champion and his training partner, Silva will fight Yushin Okami, the last opponent to defeat him (by DQ at Rumble on the Rock 8, in 2006), trying to set a new record of nine straight title defenses in the UFC. The return of the organization to Brazil will take place at Rio de Janeiro’s HSBC Arena, on August 27.

Thats a hostile environment, to say the least. I still think OKAMI can get it done tho.
 
It's not going to be a good look for AND1 when Okami wrestlefucks him into oblivion in front of his countrymen. :smug:

But seriously, I'm glad that Okami is finally going to get his title shot. Let's hope he manages to stay healthy this time. :shifty:
 
If he can get past Okami, it will be extremely interesting to see who they give him next.

No GSP. No Sonnen. Okami and Marquardt would be done. No Leben. I guess the only legit possibilities (unless they bring someone new in) would be Wanderlei or Bisping.
 
If Shields loses to GSP, I wonder if he would consider moving back to 185...I mean, he's a boring fighter to watch the majority of the time, but he's got the frame to handle 185 better than GSP without having to take months or even a year to gain the muscle needed to become a true 185er and he has the takedowns and sub defense to really give Silva trouble. his bjj is far superior to sonnens and his takedowns are nearly as good
 
Junkie says a source told them the Okami/Silva official news may not be 100% set in stone. Says they're waiting to see what happens at 129 before anything else is confirmed.

It appears Georges St. Pierre will have to wait his turn, as middleweight champion Anderson Silva will reportedly defend his title against Yushin Okami at UFC “Rio” this summer.

UFC President Dana White today confirmed the rumored contest with USA Today. The bout was first mentioned earlier this week by Silva's friend and teammate Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in his column with Brazilian newspaper O Globo.

While not yet officially announced, UFC “Rio” is scheduled to go down Aug. 27 from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie is reportedly in negotiations to fight at the event, but nothing has been made official by either the promotion or the fighter. The show marks the UFC's first trip to Brazil since “Ultimate Brazil” in 1998.

Silva and Okami have met once before, a 2006 encounter in which the Brazilian was disqualified for cracking Okami with an illegal up-kick that nearly knocked his foe unconscious.

Arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Silva has been a wrecking machine in the UFC's middleweight division, turning away all comers since capturing the title in 2006. “The Spider” rides a 14-fight winning streak into his showdown with Okami. Most recently, Silva knocked out challenger Vitor Belfort in February with a highlight-reel front kick that landed flush on his countryman's jaw and sent him reeling to the canvas.

Since losing a 2009 bout to wrestling standout Chael Sonnen in 2009, Okami has trained with his former adversary at Team Quest in Gresham, Ore., and the judo player has been a better fighter for it. “Thunder” won three-straight fights in 2010, knocking out Lucio Linhares before outpointing Mark Munoz and Nate Marquardt to earn his shot at Silva's title.

Maiquel Falcao made his UFC debut with a win over previously undefeated Gerald Harris and was set to fight Tom Lawlor at UFC Rio, but he’s no longer a UFC fighter anymore. According to his manager Marcelo Brigadeiro, who sent an open letter to TATAME.com minutes ago, the promotion decided to end his contract due to some legal problems, when he got in a fight at his hometown, in 2002.



“Good night everyone,



We’ve received an e-mail from Joe Silva yesterday saying that the UFC decided to end Maiquel Falcão’s contract. They decided to do that because of some legal problems Maiquel got involved recently.



I decided to communicate you because of the respect we have with Maiquel’s fans. I always worked in a honest and clear way about everything, and wouldn’t act that way in this situation.



This news got us by surprise and let us very shocked, mainly after we signed to fight at UFC Rio. Anyway, we’re very grateful for everything the UFC have done for Maiquel and we believe we go out in a good way.



Besides the sadness, we respect UFC’s decision and hope to return to the biggest event on the planet soon. I think this type of thing happen to make us think about a lot of things, to learn and move on, and you can be sure that Maiquel Falcão will move on.
