As it turned out, the scoring was not only announced wrong but the first reports were wrong. It was actually a draw because two judges had it even.
We've gotten so many conflicting stories on the cards. This is what the actual cards were:
Sal D'Amato had draw
10-9 Johnson
10-9 Johnson
10-8 McCall
This was read incorrectly on the air as Johnson winning.
Kon Papai
10-9 Johnson
10-9 Johnson
10-9 McCall
This was read correctly on the air as Johnson winning.
Anthony Dimitriou
10-9 Johnson
10-10 draw
10-9 McCall
This was read incorrectly on the air as McCall winning.
It should have gone to a fourth round. The commission admitted they screwed up in adding, although after Bruce Buffer announced it giving scores that would make it a split decision, he called it a majority decision, which implied two judges for Johnson and one even.
It wasn't until the press conference when they found out about the 10-8 round on the D'Amato scorecard meaning two judges had it even.
Ian McCall vs. Demetrious Johnson are going to have a rematch in a few months, with UFC looking at doing it in April if both men are okay with it. Neither appeared to be seriously hurt in the fight. Dana White was furious about how this all went down, as you can imagine.
