Last year with Chris Todd running the show Auburn went 8-5.
Without Cam Newton, Auburn is a 6-7 win team this year. He accounted for over 60% of his team's offensive yardage, and scored 48 of their 70 total offensive touchdowns on the year. He was the only quarterback to see significant PT, and ran the ball nearly 100 times more than Auburn's top running back.
To be honest its not like Malzahn even really got creative with the offensive this year... all they did was run some variation veer, QB draw, and the zone read 80% of the time and mix in the occasional run/pass option with the rare designed pass play, and Cam Newton did the rest. Hell, most were surprised when they weren't running the inverted veer, that was their bread and butter play.
Malzahn is a good offensive coordinator though, and has shown that in each of his stops, whether at Arkansas, Tulsa (Although Tulsa does rank #5 in the nation in total offense this year without him, and did before him as well), and now at Auburn.
No matter how big your hard on for Malzahn is Glen, Cam Newton made this Auburn team. He is this Auburn offense. He's that rare player that can take a 6-7 win team and take them to the national title game. Malzahn is a good offensive coordinator from what I've seen in the past, remains to be seen how good of a head coach he is, but there's no question about it, Cam Newton deserves the credit for this Auburn team's success.
