Vikings Peterson has torn ACL and MCL

LANDOVER, Md. -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson was scheduled for an MRI late Saturday after taking a direct hit to his left knee in a 33-26 win over the Washington Redskins.

Sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen the Vikings' medical staff feared the worst -- a torn ACL -- going into an MRI.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Peterson had a sprained knee and would be evaluated after the team returned to Minnesota.

"It's such a special person that you want to be right before you prognosticate on what might be," Frazier said.

Peterson said he knew "it was something bad" the moment he was hit and that he was in "severe pain" as he lay on the field. He was hurt when tackled by Redskins safety DeJon Gomes at the end of a 3-yard gain on the first offensive play of the second half.

"Anytime you take a blow to the knee like that, you're concerned about the ACL, MCL," Peterson said as he stood on crutches in the locker room. "I'm trying to stay as positive as I can."

A torn ACL, the worst case scenario, would likely sideline Peterson for some nine months and make it difficult for him to return for the start of next season.

On the play after Peterson was hurt, Minnesota's Christian Ponder suffered a head injury when sacked by Adam Carriker and London Fletcher. Ponder remained in the game for one more play -- a third-down incomplete pass -- before heading to the locker room.

Frazier said Ponder had "concussion-like symptoms." The coach said he's uncertain whether the quarterback will play in next week's season finale against the Chicago Bears.

"We'll have to weigh it when we get back," Frazier said, "and I'll follow the doctor's lead."

Peterson had 12 carries for 38 yards when he left. He also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Ponder completed 8 of 13 passes for 68 yards. He was replaced by Joe Webb, who scored on a 9-yard run on the next series to give the Vikings the lead.

What a wonderful fucking day in a wonderful fucking season. Our backup quarterback makes us the recipients of this week's 'winning their way out of the top 3 picks' award and our star player gets an injury which might extend into next fucking season.

I'd say things can't get any worse but if I do that we'll probably end up winning our last two games.
 
Wes Welker had an ACL injury later and made it back for the start of last season, and Adrian Peterson is certainly a guy with the drive to make it back for the start of the season. We will have to wait and see, but certainly Vikings fans are pissed as are his fantasy owners.

This brings up a good question though. For a team that is out of the playoff race like the Vikings, do you risk playing your franchise player or would you leave him inactive in a season like this? I wouldn't, because I would still want to be competitive and having Peterson take the pressure of Ponder is huge, but I want to hear what others think.

Bad news for the guy but at least he'll have the offseason to recover, should be good to go week 1 next year. You never know how this kind of injury will affect a player though.
 
First pick in a Fantasy Football draft sucks balls, last time I had it I drafted LT the year after he broke the TD record, this year I drafted AD, as soon as I did I knew something would happen. I hate picking first.
 
Goes from guaranteed LOCK of a Top 5 pick to...?

The team was Bum City to begin with this year and is now expanding into a Bum Metropolis if AP can't get back by Training Camp next year.

Sound like my buddy a couple years ago taking Tom Brady with the 1st pick...then he tears his ACL in the first game.

If there isn't any complications... yes, he should be. Look at the history of these injuries. Unless there are complications after surgery, there shouldn't be any reason he shouldn't be suited up and ready to go by week 1 of next season.
