TEMPE, Ariz. -- Kurt Warner's agent declined to say whether his client had scheduled visits with any other teams now that the Arizona Cardinals quarterback has become a free agent.

"I really don't want to get into the specifics with that," Mark Bartelstein said. "Obviously, people are calling."

Warner's agent has had in-depth conversations with San Francisco 49ers officials, a source told Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com.

Warner became a free agent Friday after he and the Cardinals failed to reach a deal on a new contract. The 37-year-old quarterback has made it clear that he wants to remain in Arizona for what probably would be the final two years of his career.

Bartelstein said he and the Cardinals continue to talk.

"Nothing's changed other than free agency has started," he said Friday evening. "It's an hour-by-hour situation is the best way I can put it."

Bartelstein said Warner deserves a salary to match his status after leading the unheralded Cardinals to the Super Bowl last season. The agent said that would be an average of the top five paid players at his position, about $14.5 million.

But Warner's age -- he will be 38 when next season starts -- could hold down any interest in him and lower the amount he will be paid.

If he can't strike a deal in Arizona, Warner could end up playing against the Cardinals twice annually. The 49ers play in the NFC West, as do the Cardinals.

The 49ers' woes at quarterback were thought to have been resolved when the team selected Alex Smith with the first overall pick in the 2005 draft. But because of ineffectiveness and injuries, including a shoulder injury that required surgery last year, Smith's future in San Francisco is shaky.

San Francisco would likely have to pay Warner more than the $10 million to $12 million per year its offering. If Warner accepted an offer from the 49ers, economics along with the team's spotty quarterback play, would dictate that he go to the Bay Area as the starter.

The 49ers have used eight different starting quarterbacks the past three seasons, and landing Warner, even at his age, would provide much-needed stability at the position.

If SF were to somehow get Warner to sign, which I highly doubt: Not only would they sweep Arizona and those ''outstanding'' WRs, but they'd win the division in 2009. However, I don't see SF as the perfect fit for Kurt Warner - Kurt Warner is a throw first player, and Mike has already made it clear he wants the 49ers to be a run first team. When you sign a guy like Warner, you have to base your offense around him, because if you don't - It might be the NYG all over again. It's simple, really - Sign him, let him play. Don't try holding him back. This worries me about the 49ers/Kurt Warner.

Come on, what better way to get Arizona to pay up, than to start talks with a division opponent? This would be a hell of a pick up for the 49ers, though.

This is an agent ploy to get Arizona to pony up. I believe it will be Arizona or retirement for Warner.

It's quite obvious. Out of all the teams that talked to Warner (There's been more than one fucking team,) the 49ers name just happens to... ''leak'' out? However, I'm not buying the retirement stuff anymore - If anything, he'll cave and accept Arizona's offer, unless a team offers what he wants, in my opinion. I fully expect to see Kurt Warner in 2009, though.

If the 49ers are able to sign Warner - who will turn 38 in June - it might be viewed as a shift of power in the NFC West. The 49ers would strengthen a position at which they have no announced starter, while taking away perhaps the Cardinals' most important player.

Warner was considered an MVP candidate for most of the season while leading the Cardinals to the NFC West championship and a spot in the Super Bowl. Warner completed 67.1 percent of his passes, throwing for 4,583 yards with 30 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. His passer rating of 96.9 ranked third in the NFL.

While there is a faction in the 49ers' hierarchy that believe the 49ers have a legitimate chance to acquire Warner, others in the decision-making process have privately expressed skepticism. The fear among some individuals in the 49ers organization is that Warner might cancel his trip to the Bay Area and re-sign with the Cardinals on Sunday.''

John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports the agent for free-agent QB Kurt Warner (Cardinals), Mark Bartelstein, said "some feelings have been hurt," with Warner in his relationship with the Arizona Cardinals during contract negotiations. "All of a sudden, people pursue you and it's nice to be wanted," Bartelstein added. "You hear some things that are intriguing. Some things have developed in the last few days that are intriguing. He really didn't want to go through free agency. We thought something would be done by now (in Arizona). It's disappointing."

The idea of seeing Warner in a Niners jersey is growing on me. Which is weird, having rooted against him in both St. Loo and Arizona. And sorta when he was in New York. He's a serious upgrade over what SF has, so it would be a smart move in the regard. I'm leery of a long-term deal, though.

Well I agree warner is worth what he is asking for another year, but... I'm ok with him moving on, I hope Matt has developed enough to be able to take this team to the playoffs, and if so we have a QB that hopefully we can keep for 10+ years...
