Vikings 2010 Draft Results

Cook has excellent size and strength for the position. He lacks great burst and pure speed to play out on an island in man coverage but is versatile enough to be effective as a rolled up defender or move inside to the safety position. Cook uses his hands well to re-route receivers off the line of scrimmage

Gerhart is a big, powerful ball carrier that has just enough speed to be a threat. He runs with a good pad level and consistently breaks through first contact and gets a lot of his yards after initial contact

Griffen has average height with good bulk for the position. He has natural power and strength at the point of attack when defending the run. He leverages the ball well with a powerful jolt off the line of scrimmage

DeGeare is a physically gifted lineman who has struggled with the mental aspects of the game as well as college. He missed the 2008 season by being academically ineligible and is not aware of twists, stunts and games up front by the defensive linemen

Triplett is a big, strong inside linebacker who started for only one season in college. He was very productive in 2009, but his athleticism and lack of experience is a concern at the next level. He is best between the tackles attacking the line of scrimmage

Webb is a size/speed prospect with the impressive arm strength to be viewed as a developmental project. Overall physical tools allow him to contribute in a variety of ways

Shuler is the son of ex-NFL TE Mickey Shuler Sr. and has a good understanding of the game thanks to his bloodlines. He is a big, powerful tight end that can overpower defenders to the ball when in a crowd and shows good strength as an in line blocker

Had 54 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, three sacks and one interception from his inside linebacker position

Many of the draft experts have given the Minnesota Vikings a below average grade for their picks in the 2010 NFL Draft. And many of those analysts could receive the same grade. The conventional wisdom amongst the experts had Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen going in the top 10 picks (top 5 for ESPN's Mel Kiper) and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow dropping out of sight. Clausen went deep in the second round and Tebow went 25th overall to the Denver Broncos. Typically, the quarterbacks are the most scrutinized players in the draft, aside from the first overall pick (QB Sam Bradford going to the Rams) that everyone got right, the prognosticators performed poorly also. Apparently "expert analysis" is not an exact science.

Neither is the draft. In the best case scenario, a team can pick up six or seven players (before signing undrafted players), hope a couple make an immediate impact and the rest contribute in time by either playing special teams, adding depth or taking over as a starter after a couple of years of learning the game from the sidelines.

And if you analyze the Vikings draft from that generic criteria, it says here they get a grade of B.
The Vikings traded their first round pick for an early second rounder, a switch of fourth rounders and a seventh round pick and chose cornerback Chris Cook. They lost out on cornerback Patrick Robinson by making the trade, so you can follow those two players' careers to judge what was lost or gained there. In the meantime, it is very possible, Cook will contribute this coming season. With Cedric Griffin hurt, Antoine Winfield coming off injury and the outside possibility of him moving to safety, you could see Lito Sheppard and Cook as the opening day starting corners this season. Cook's height makes him a valuable asset against a trend of taller receivers in the league, and he could get some work against them in the goal line fade routes.
