I half expected a PistolPete thread with "buffalo should have won" as the first entry.
Anyways...
Just some quick hits , since week 1 is usually full of oddities and unexpected performances.
1. I like the new blood of Gruden and Bruschi on ESPN , Dungy/Harrison on NBC. Unlike recent additions (Bettis/Strahan/Tiki)
These guys seem to have a fresh view and fuller grasp of the decisions and plays.Bruschi/Harrison seem to have a damn good grasp of other teams personnel as well.
Although I did find it funny that Gruden disagreed with Jaws and said he would onside right before the fumble ,then jaws says "good thing they kicked it".
2. Adrian Petersons run = wow......LT not fumbling in over 1000 carries is amazing...him not being in the game at crucial moments 2 years in a row is both puzzling and possibly very telling.
3. Thank you ESPN for getting rid of that god awful bar at the bottom of the screen. New overlay 10000x better.
4. NFL off season is in a bit of a flux..some changes need to be made.
I saw ALOT of ugly passes , serious disorganization on offense/defense , badly blown coverages ,and blitzes befuddling offenses.
From top to bottom there was alot of ugly football being played. Thats directly do to the off season/preseason setup.
QBs are throwing from April till now. Yet 5 months of timing and rhythm practiced against air and non contact all goes to shit when the pressure starts. Romo/Rivers/Brady/Favre threw some ugly looking short passes that you rarely see from those guys. I saw QB/WRs be completely out of sync. No excuse for that if youve been together for the last 5 months. This is why you NEED preseason games. Having your starters in there for a few drives in game 1-2..one half of 3rd game..and none of the 4th is doing NOTHING for team progression.
Too much reliance is going into off season programs causing a shitty pre season product which will likely lead to an expanded regular season. Noone outside of owners and some delusional fans want to see it. NFL should be limiting these mandatory camps. Its hurting there product. Teams should wise up and take the lead. Starting earlier doesnt = wins. But being sharp early in the season while everyone else is still getting into rhythm will get you an extra win or 2.
A good example is Philadelphia/Buffalo. A backup QB who hasnt practiced or played with the first team being asked to start already. There was a time when backups DID practice with the first team especially in the pre-season where theyd get multiple drives with 1st team. You know "just in case".
A ST mistake costs Buf a game. ST in preseason = throw in every guy barely making the roster see what he can do. You end up with ST who cant tackle , no cohesion , and making mental errors in situations they havent seen since last year.
Id also add Cincy and an ill advised tip late in the game (YOU DO NOT TIP THE BALL AT THE END OF THE GAME!!)....but its Cincinnati..theyd fuck it up no matter what.
Buncha televised games...most were pretty entertaining and competitive :applause:
