They say there’s always a first time for everything and when it comes to the NFL, that may be true when it comes to females officiating.
ESPN’s Jane McManus indicated on Saturday how Carl Johnson, who’s the NFL’s head of officials, recently discussed how there are a few female referees under consideration to make the jump to the NFL and that he expects one to be hired soon. If this does happen, it would be the first time in history a woman would be an official in the NFL.
One of the likely candidates to become one of the first female officials in the NFL is Sarah Thomas–who is currently a Division I referee in Conference USA. Thomas is entering her fifth season at the Division I level–which also happens to be the minimum amount of years needed before the NFL considers bringing referees up to the professional level.
“Any professional sport is at the highest level, and if they asked me to officiate at that level, I would not turn them down,” Thomas said courtesy of McMane. “But at the same time, I have the understanding at the D-I level [about] what it takes to keep you here, the energy it takes to get prepared. You are grateful to be officiating at the D-I level.”
As McManus points out, adding female referees to the NFL could be beneficial for both ends. The NFL needs to hire the best of the best when it comes to knowing the game of football–no matter what gender they may be. And if the league is as close to hiring female referees as Johnson claims they are–this will hopefully open the door for more female referees to be part of one of the most successfully run leagues in all of sports.
