Hall never played much at WR because the Chiefs didn't need him to play there. If they had needed him to play at WR as much as the Bears needed Hester last year, I'm sure Hall could have matched Hester's unimpressive numbers.

The Chiefs primary receivers were Johnnie Morton and Eddie Kennison, they could've used another receiver to fill in no doubt.

Ill admit Hester is definitely not an ideal #1, but when you have that big play potential and Hester's ability to either get YAC or get lucky enough to catch some deep balls from Cutler, he'll be able to pile up the yardage. By no means do I want us to have to rely on the guy.. but if they're going to rely on him and give him a ton of looks, he might end up getting a shit ton of yards by default.

I just don't see it. Sure, he's fast but plenty of fast WR's don't do shit in the NFL because they are one dimensional and all they have is the fly pattern. Hester falls into that catagory IMO. I don't care how fast he is, he's not going to beat NFL DB's deep a lot if they already know what he is going to do/is limited to. He could be a nice gadget WR but honestly he's spent two offseasons learning WR and I didn't see much of a jump from 07 to 08 from a lot of perspectives that would signify to me that time is all Hester needs to become a better WR.

The best the Bears could do for him and their team is use him like they did in 2007. The 08 thing ain't working and the Bears need to concentrate on finding real WR's to start, not trying to fit square pegs into round holes the way they have done with Hester and Rashied Davis.

Dante Hall did fill in. He had his little role. The point is the Chiefs had one of the best offensive teams in football during that time, and didn't need Hall to be a starting receiver.

Hester has improved. But he will never be a true number 1 receiver. If the Bears had a no. 1 wideout and had hester to compliment that no. 1 receiver he could be a legitimate threat. The Bears need to get him in open field. Sure he may have speed but that doesn't necesarily lead to seperation. I mean the Bears have to throw to someone, but is he gonna be the guy who is making Brandon Marshall type catches in coverage? God no. I won't be surprised when Forte gets checked down to all season long again because quite frankly, Cutler is a great quarterback, but you need half decent receiving play to succeed.

Just because Hester can outrun a CB doesn't mean he'll be open. I remember Al Harris running foot for foot with him. There is so much more that goes into being a wide receiver than pure speed.

LOL at the use of the word "haters". Hester isn't very good at WR. He sucked two years ago, and was a little bit better last year. Sorry, but thats reality. To me, he's not savvy enough to take his WR game to the next level. I guess that makes me a "hater"...

Because IMO it's a dumbass move to move a guy from KR/CB to WR when he's never shown the ability to play the position at a high level, then label him as the #1 guy when he's never shown any glimpse of being able to carry the load and be "the guy". Why would I care if he proves me wrong? Here: For the record. I HOPE HE PROVES ME WRONG. Because if he does that means he has turned into a legit #1 NFL WR which the Bears have been missing since the mid-late 90's at best. If he proves me wrong it only helps the Bears. So I hope Hester proves me wrong. To this point I don't think he will because I have seen nothing from him to show me any evidence that he is capable of being a #1 NFL WR, but maybe Cutler can actually help him out.

All this being said it still doesn't change the fact that the Bears IMO are taking a large and uneccessary risk making Devin Hester their #1 WR when he's undersized, unproven, and raw. They have better #1 options on the team IMO and Hester is better suited for other roles.

Several times last season the Bears wouldn't even have Hester run a pass route...at the snap of the ball he'd stand at the LOS, and if Orton saw no one open he'd dump it off to a stationary Hester. As someone else said, if all you can do is run downfield in a straight line, even the slowest DBs can cover you. If you don't believe me, how many of Hester's 51 catches last year went for 40+ yards? 1?

Bennett, Iglesias, hell IMO Rideau would be a better option as a #1 guy. Hester just isn't a No. 1. You even said so yourself in the Bears offseason thread.

1. Everyone knows he has talent. The problem is that it's not talent geared for being a WR. Sure he's fast but that's about it from the WR standpoint. Even then one of his biggest problems is learning how to harness the speed for WR. And that one was a short slant against Minny he broke for a long gain.

To be fair though too Orton missed Hester on a few deep passes last year because of Orton's lack of accuracy down the field. Nevertheless, Hester for as fast as he is has never shown to get good seperation from DB's consistantly.

Maybe you think you didn't see him do it last year, but he did. In any game where we needed a drive, Hester was the guy getting open - whether he did it on a short, in route, or the dreaded fly route.

The problem was it was too often against soft coverage, bad coverage, and not consistant enough.

I've said before that he'd be a lethal weapon as a slot receiver, but given the lack of WR's on the Bears' roster, I really can't blame them for pushing him to be more. Until we get our number one, Hester will be it - and with someone who can actually OVERtrhow him as QB, I think he's got a good chance at filling in nicely.

Also - I didn't see Hester having separation problems last year. Route-running problems sure, but the routes he had down he was definitely getting separation.

They're showing the Bears/Packers game from December last year every now and again on NFLN - you should check it out some time. Hester gets separation.

You should watch more games too. I already stated Hester can get seperation. The problem is he doesn't consistantly do it....because everyone knows what he can/can't do and plays to it.

Yeah because we know a whole lot about Hester as a #1. 600yds and 3 TD's Yippee. Fact is, those guys are conditioned, programmed, trained, designed, built, etc for teh role of a #1 while Hester isn't. I'm not saying those guys are studs but their skill sets are more intune with what a #1 should be. They are in the least at least true WR's and not converted KR/CB.

In time, I think Iglesias could be it, but he's got to prove he's the man for the job first.

What better way to prove than to have him actually play the position and show you what he can do from it..................

Umm... let him play in the slot for a while? And let Bennett play #2 for a while. If it all works out, hopefully they can move Bennett to #1, Iglesias to #2, and Hester to #3, and get him back on kickoffs. But for NOW, Hester would logically have a better understanding of the routes and has the most experience - you've gotta go with that until the other guys prove they're ready.

How can you assume Hester has a better grasp? Bennett has spent the last two years learning all 3 wideout positions. How can you just move Hester to the slot and assume he will know the playbook whenhe had enough trouble just knowing the #1 last year? Your argument is that Hester is the #1 until other guys prove they can play it......by playing other WR positions.It just doesn't add fore me, especially seeing as Hester has been less than impressive in two seasons as a WR and has really done nothing to earn the un questioned #1 WR that the Bears have seemingly bestowed upon him.

Because he has actual on-field experience. If one of those guys can come on the field and prove he's better, then that's that. But to start with, I think they're right to go with Hester... unless we land Marshall or Boldin (I can dream).

He has Mushin leading him around on a career day tour by the hand and Orton missing him on a bunch of skinny posts and fly patterns. On the field experience doesn't neccessarily equate to him being the best choice for the job. I understand why you'd want to go with that but not sure who the Bears are trying to kid(themselves maybe) saying Hester is a legit #1.
