Yankees, Marlins Divided On Yoenis Cespedes

There is divide in both the Yankees' and Marlins' front offices on whether to pursue Yoenis Cespedes, according to Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. Knobler says the two clubs, along with the Red Sox, may not be as heavily involved in the bidding for the Cuban outfielder as expected.

While there have been conflicting reports on the Yankees' interest in Cespedes, the Marlins are regarded by some teams as the favorite for the 26-year-old, as Knobler wrote earlier this week. According to Knobler, however, Cespedes has told people he plans to make his permanent home in the Dominican Republic rather than Miami, and may prefer to play for a team besides the Fish.

Even with Cespedes moving closer to establishing residency in the Dominican, it doesn't appear he'll officially become a free agent until sometime in January.

I agree with you on that one. It would be a nice pick up for teams looking for depth, if it wasn't for the fact that he will look for the big bucks $$.
 
He's also rated as 70 for his speed and power. He is, essentially, a top 5 prospect.

If he is 26, he should be hitting his prime right as he is a rookie in MLB. Alexei Ramirez came in to MLB straight from the Cuban leagues. If he can put up those kind of numbers in CF while playing + defense, he's at least a 3 WAR player and that is pretty pricy at the CF position.

Please show me where you saw this. Those are very generous grades for a guy who is playing single-A caliber ball at 26.

He's also hit in the WBC which is above Single A. And, need I remind you, Alexei Ramirez came right in from the Cuban league and hit .290/.317/.475

Bryce Harper had a 70 power rating at Single A. And he isn't even done growing yet.

While his contract requests may be huge, he has at the very least, shown that he's worth a gamble.

I agree Cespedes has legit power and speed. But his swing has a big hole in it, even I can see it when I watch the video. He's going to have problems with MLB breaking stuff, the teams scouting him are going to have to determine how big of a problem that will be.

I don't see that as a bad comparison, but I personally think Upton is more his ceiling than his floor. 30 home runs is a bit high of an expectation to put on the guy, at least for his first few years. He has to make contact in order to hit home runs, and stay in the lineup. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic but I think it's more likely he ends up like Gary Matthews, Jr. A good defensive player with decent pop, who can hold down a position in a platoon situation for 400 at bats, but too limited in the secondary skills to play every day.
 
30 home runs is a bit much. He will hit for power, I'd say 20, depending on his home ballpark.
 
So thoughts on Cespedes brutal stint in the Dominican leagues so far? Small sample size yes, but he is probably losing money. He can't hit a breaking ball at all.

Carlos Gomez plays on the same team, so it's worth checking out a game. :smug:

Can't see the Orioles spending the money with his performance in the Dominican league. As you said, can't hit a breaking ball, and that just goes with the feeling that he isn't MLB ready, at least not at the plate. Baltimore would love to make another international splash, but the cost won't be justified for them.
